Presentation transcript:

Unit 1 Learning Objectives Experience a science lesson that integrates CA CCSS speaking/listening, writing and reading with science content Identify Literacy in Science Standards for grades K-12 Explore strategies to incorporate the standards into your science teaching 1

New Opportunities for All Learners Common Core Standards (ELA and Mathematics) Next Generation Science Standards 21st Century Skills 2

BIG IDEA for Science ELA: students will be able to read, write, and research across the curriculum Mathematics: students will be able to learn and apply concepts and mathematical ways of thinking to real world issues and challenges using the content 3

Transition to The Investigation 4

Observation: Notebook Entry 5 Take independent notes as you observe samples 1 and 2. Use all senses except taste.

Observation: ICE 6 What do you observe in: -Cup #1? -Cup #2? Write your observations in your notebook.

Group Discussion -Discuss your observations -Draw a picture on a whiteboard or chart paper that explains what the group thinks happened in each cup -Write a detailed explanation on a whiteboard or chart paper of what you think happened in each cup 7

Sharing & Comparing Ideas Share your whiteboard or chart paper Compare and contrast ideas each whiteboard or chart paper What is similar in your group’s thinking with other group’s thinking? What is different from your group’s thinking with other group’s thinking? Write your ideas in your notebook 8

Read All About It Use a “talk to the text” strategy to read the text Read: Why Does Ice Float? 9

Pause & Reflect -After reading, modify your group’s drawing and thinking written on the whiteboard or chart paper -In your group, discuss how your thinking changed from your original drawing and explanation - Share your revisions with other groups 10

Linking Science to CCSS What language processes did you use in the investigation? 11

CA CCSS: Speaking and Listening, Grade 5 SL5.4 Report on a topic or text or present an opinion, sequencing ideas logically and using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace. 12

CCSS: Writing Standards for Literacy in Science, Grade 6-8 Text Types and Purposes WHST Write arguments focused on discipline-specific content. a. Introduce claim(s) about a topic or issue, acknowledge and distinguish the claim(s) from alternative or opposing claims, and organize the reasons and evidence logically. b. Support claim(s) with logical reasoning and relevant, accurate data and evidence, that demonstrate an understanding of the topic or text, using credible sources. c. Use words, phrases, and clauses to create cohesion and clarify the relationships among claim(s), counterclaims, reasons, and evidence. d. Establish and maintain a formal style. e. Provide a concluding statement or section that follows from and supports the argument presented. 13

CCSS: Reading Standards for Literacy in Science, Grade 9-10 RST Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of science and technical texts, attending to the precise details of explanations or descriptions. RST Analyze the structure of the relationships among concepts in a text, including relationships among key terms (e.g., force, friction, reaction force, energy). RST Compare and contrast findings presented in a text to those from other sources (including their own experiments), noting when the findings support or contradict previous explanations or accounts. 14

Pause & Reflect How can the use of CCSS for ELA/Literacy promote better understanding of science content while building students’ literacy? Write your ideas in your notebook 15

Transition to Standards Comparison: ELA and ELA Content Literacy in Science 16

ELA Text Type and Purposes: Middle School Fold the CCSS Example A (7th grade) in half so that the left side is facing up. Review the ELA standards for text types and purposes: #1 (argument) #2 (informative) #3 (narrative) 17

Content Literacy in Science: Text Type and Purposes Unfold the paper Review the Content Literacy in Science Standards in the right column What do you notice? 18

ELA Text Type and Purposes: Elementary School Fold the CCSS Example B (5th grade) in half so that the left side is facing up Unfold the paper What do you notice? K-5 Literacy in Science Standards are embedded in the K-5 CCSS for ELA/Literacy 19

5th Grade ELA Text Type and Purposes (W5.1) 1. Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information. –a. Introduce a topic or text clearly, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure in which ideas are logically grouped to support the writer’s purpose. –b. Provide logically ordered reasons that are supported by facts and detail. –c. Link opinion and reasons using words, phrases, and clauses (e.g., consequently, specifically). –d. Provide a concluding statement or section related to the opinion presented. 20
