 SAT Question of the Day #13  Unit Three  Activity 3.3 p. 179  Activity 3.2 p. 173  Exit Slip: Exercising My Five Freedoms handout OBJECTIVES: Students will examine key ideas for the unit. Students will determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text.

 Three testing areas on the SAT  Math  Critical Reading  Writing Skills  Types of questions in Writing Skills section  Identifying Sentence Errors  Improving Sentences  Improving Paragraphs

 A Writing Skills section  Usually 25 of these questions broken up into two sections of the test  Usually increase in difficulty  Questions ask you to make changes to sentences to make them more effective

 Agreement in number – can’t have a singular modifier with a plural noun  “these (plural) kind (singular)” - WRONG  “this (sing) kind (sing)” – CORRECT  Pronoun – Antecedent agreement – pronoun that replaces the noun must agree in number with the antecedent  Use singular pronouns for singular antecedents  Use plural pronouns for plural antecedents  Diction – be sure to pick the correct word  Affect (v) and effect (n)  Eminent and imminent  Hanged (people) and hung (objects)  Parallel structure – words, phrases, etc. must be written in the same grammatical structure  Verb tense – all verbs must be the same tense  Modifiers – phrase must be in close proximity to the word it is telling more about/describing  Misplaced – word is in the sentence but in the wrong location  Dangling – word that is being modified is not in the sentence and must be added

 What is a MODIFIER?  It EXPLAINS or DESCRIBES a word.  What are the two types of possible errors?  Dangling  After eating six cheeseburgers, nausea overwhelmed her.  Misplaced  Having a bargain price, Marcel snatched up the designer jeans right away

 Dangling Modifiers seem logically to modify NO word at (a word seems missing ).  To correct a dangling modifier - add a word the dangling phrase can sensibly modify.

Working all night long, sleep was welcome. Is “sleep” working all night long?

Working all night long, Frank welcomed sleep. Now we know WHO was working all night long.

 #1. Where do you go to get information on a major news story?  Mark out “Write N/A to indicate you would not use that outlet.”  Rank the outlets 1-7 with 1 being the first place you would go for information on a major news story and 7 the last place you would go.  #2. Which outlet is usually most accurate and trustworthy?  Mark out “Write N/A to indicate you would not use that outlet.”  Rank the outlets 1-7 with 1 being the most accurate and trustworthy and 7 the least accurate and trustworthy.

 Underline words in the vocabulary list as they are found in the First Amendment.  Then, define the words.  Finally, rewrite the Amendment, replacing the vocabulary words with their definitions in the space provided on pager 174.

REWRITTEN FIRST AMENDMENT  Congress shall make no law that has anything to do with creating or setting up a state-sponsored religion; nor any law that prevents citizens from practicing their faith without fear of payback; nor can Congress write laws that conflict, cut short, or in any way curb the freedom of speech of news outlets to report; or the right of the people to get together for peaceful reasons or seek justice from the Government in the even that one suffers an injustice or other attack on one’s rights.

 Look for stories in the media that address the First Amendment, and bring them in to share with the class.

 What are the five freedoms secured in the First Amendment?  Religion  Speech  Press  Assembly  Petition  Exercising My Five Freedoms  Write down at least two ways you personally exercise or could exercise these rights.
