The key to writing a good essay is making sure you have excellent MAIN IDEAS for each body paragraph.

Main Idea = Debate Argument The main idea is an overarching argument that can be supported by evidence. It is not evidence itself (fact/quote). It is not a topic. It is not a quotation.

Which is the strong main idea? 1. Nuclear energy 2. In 2011, President Obama authorized a budget for new nuclear plants in the U.S. 3. My hybrid car uses as much electricity as my house air-conditioning unit. 4. Nuclear regulations have proven useful to increase safety of U.S. citizens.

Which is the strong main idea? 1. Plant Vogtle is planned to be built in Atlanta, Georgia. 2. Half of the nuclear power plants in the U.S. are more than 30 years old. 3. Nuclear power is experiencing a rebirth, with world economies choosing it as the clean electricity. 4. There are fossil fuels, solar energy, and nuclear energy.

Which is the strong main idea? 1. US electricity demand is projected to increase 24% by Oil, coal and natural gas are fossil fuels. 3. Nuclear power, resisted by many, may be a long term solution and has come a long way since Chernobyl. 4. The Price-Anderson act guarantees U.S. utilities 98% protection against nuclear-accident liability and transfers the costs to the taxpayers.
