Math Basic Facts –Addition –Subtraction –Multiplication –Division Fact Families

Basic Word Problem Jenny bought 4 goldfish. Her brother Jimmy bought twice as many goldfish. How many goldfish did Jimmy buy?

Multi-Step Word Problem Jenny bought 4 goldfish. Her brother Jimmy bought twice as many goldfish. If the goldfish cost $5 each, how much money did Jimmy spend?

Extraneous Information At the store, goldfish cost $5 each and beta fish cost $3 each. Jimmy decided to buy five goldfish. How much money did Jimmy spend?

How can I help? Have your child double check their homework before you look over it When working with your child, and ask them… –What is this problem asking you to do? –Which type of problem is this (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, ect.)? –Can the problem be solved in one step, or will you need to complete more than one step?

Connections (Background Knowledge) Text to Self – finding something that is connected to my own life Text to Text – finding something that is connected to other book. Text to World – finding something that is connected to things in your world.

Questioning What questions help me make sense of my reading? What do you wonder? What might happen next? How will the story end? Why did the author write this story? What does the author mean?

Inferring What do you infer? What do I already know? Which text clues are important? What is the author trying to present? I can put all the clues together and figure out….

Predict and Set a Purpose What is my purpose for reading? What do I already know? What do I think will probably happen? Was my prediction correct? How has my thinking changed?

Visualize Which details create pictures in my mind? What do I already know? What sensory language is the author using? How can my senses put me in the story? –I can see… –I can hear… –I can feel… –I can smell…

Summarize Beginning Middle End Summary – combine the beginning, middle and end (B-M-E) to form the summary of the story.

Story Structure Setting – (When and Where the story takes place). Characters – (inside and outside character traits, does the character change in the story?) Plot – order of events – story problem and solution
