SECRET Overview of the Emergency Response Plan (ERP) Guides for Water and Wastewater Systems 3 What is an ERP? Document that provides a step-by-step response to, and recovery from, incidents related to situations of emergency Approach ERP tested in the past in Ontario and British Columbia Expanded with more examples, reference material and reporting features Outline of the Guides and templates List of contacts System information Mitigation measures Potential emergency situations and possible responses Communication plan: public notices, phone trees, etc Templates

Asset maintenance cards: tasks, frequency Task description cards: summary, by who, parts, tools, etc Maintenance schedule and checklist Maintenance tracking tool: to documents maintenance work done and associated costs (work order system)

SECRET Overview of the Source Water Protection Plan (SWPP) Guide 5 What is a SWPP? A plan that protects public health by reducing the risk of contamination of source water and helps to provide safe drinking water. Approach: TSAG in Alberta and a source protection expert developed and teste the Guide and template On-reserve scope and water safety plan approach Pilot in a First Nation community in Alberta Outline of the Guide and template What is source protection? Establish a working committee Assess source contamination threats and risks Rate and rank risks to prioritise control measures Develop and implement community-based source water protection control measures (e.g. land use)

SECRET Next Step – Development and Implementation 6 Communicate the guides and templates across regions templates.htmlhttp:// templates.html Through presentations at operators and CRT annual gatherings Promote the development of community-specific SWPPs, ERPs, and MMPs in First Nations Communities Through FN partners (TSAG, OFNTSC, CRTPA, tribal councils, etc.) Through CRT annual plans and ongoing support

SECRET Next Step – Development and Implementation 7 How can CRTs help? Development phase: By making the development and implementation of plans a priority as part of annual plans By supporting operators developing their own ERPs and MMPs for their system(s) using AANDC guides and templates By developing, using and improving their own templates By replicating ERPs and MMPs in other communities Implementation phase: By helping operators put their ERPs and MMPs into action By sharing successful models and lessons learned with the AANDC regional office By helping operators update their plans By training new operators and ensuring continuity
