Andrew Smith 1 Revision (or Don’t Panic)

Andrew Smith 2 Revision This session will cover The recommended study list Revision and Exam tips The CCNA certification exam and ‘prep course’ The specimen exam paper

Andrew Smith 3 Revision The recommended study list (1) Basic principles –OSI (in an overview) –TCP/IP model (in an overview) –Devices –Protocols –Connection types and generally how they work –CSMA/CD –STP Collision & broadcast domains –Hubs Vs Switches Vs Routers –Networks Vs Subnets

Andrew Smith 4 Revision The recommended study list (2) VLANs - why & how –Trunking –VTP –Dot1Q or ISL Difference between switches & routers in forwarding/routing and learning/tables –Reflect on TMA 01 CHAP authentication –WAN connection control over a shared system

Andrew Smith 5 Revision The recommended study list (3) What ACLs do –Apart from drive us mad –Standard vs Extended –Traffic control –Security Aggregate addresses & CIDR –Doing them –Why do we have them VLSM and Subnetting –How to solve at least one problem

Andrew Smith 6 Revision The recommended study list (4) DR & BDR election –Why OSPF uses this –Priorities automatic and configurable Static & dynamic routes –How Routers route –How routers learn –Why do we have static (and the advantage they offer) EIGRP & OSPF –How they work –Distance-vector vs link-state and Hybrid Be able to explain given basic CLI commands Basic WAN technology

Andrew Smith 7 Revision The recommended study list (5) Be able to explain given basic CLI commands The commands will be common commands covered on CCNA 2-4 –Show –Write –Interface –ACL –Routing –NAT/DHCP

Andrew Smith 8 Revision The recommended study list (6) Basic WAN technology –ISDN –Frame Relay –PPP

Andrew Smith 9 Revision Revision and Exam tips (1) The most important, do some CCNA 4 is scheduled to complete at the end of March The exam is at the end of April You will receive a letter with the exam centre and date Spend at least the same study time on revision (suggested minimum of 4 hours per week) Set self a couple of subnet problems, but DO NOT GET HUNG UP on this, it is unlikely to offer you any marks advantage

Andrew Smith 10 Revision Revision and Exam tips (2) Create some simple ‘comparison’ charts as an aide memoir Look at the ‘points’ offered, this is a hint, each one ‘normally’ means you have to offer some knowledge. Be strategic, keep a mental tally of points, if you are unsure tally what you have completed, this is a ‘rough’ guide to potential marks Count the questions and their size and work out the time needed (this is five minutes well spent) 40% is the bottom line, work as though 50% is the base, allow yourself some scope

Andrew Smith 11 Revision The CCNA certification exam(1) This is an independent qualification from the OU course –Set by Cisco, managed independently, this is the same for all Cisco courses –You have to take this exam in a ‘prometric’ or ‘vue’ centre near you –Cost for exam is £105 approx –Pass mark is 849/1000, this is practical and theory, the exam demands the detail covered –It is worth investing in ‘exam cram’ material –Duration is no more than 90 minutes

Andrew Smith 12 Revision The CCNA certification exam(2) Barnfield are offering a ‘prep’ day after May, this is not compulsory, it is an ‘opportunity’ –Cost will be £60.50 –You will be able to complete the ‘voucher’ exam, which will give you a 50% discount on the ‘prometric’ or ‘vue’ test –You can only complete the voucher exam in this session as Cisco requires ‘invigilation’ –You cannot enrol today, we accept payment by cheque or card –Dates on offer are Friday June 9 th or Saturday June the 17 th

Andrew Smith 13 Revision The CCNA certification exam(3) Enrolment instructions –Dates on offer are Friday June 9 th or Saturday June the 17 th –Course code is TYEW5D1SI-05JVEX –Fee is £60.50 (fee waivers do not apply, as we are charging cost only) –If you are paying by cheque, please put your name and address on the back as well as the course code –If you are paying by credit or debit card, can you include the 3 digit security code on the ‘signature’ strip on the rear of the card (there is a gap on the enrolment form, next to the switch issue number for this) –Duration is 5.5 hours, weeks = 1 –Please post this form with payment details to Angela Barber T228 Voucher Exam Course Site Office Barnfield College Technology Centre Enterprise Way Luton Bedfordshire LU3 4BU –We MUST receive all enrolments by the 17 th of May –We can only run each day with a minimum of 20 students on each –Any enrolment queries you can contact or

Andrew Smith 14 Revision The Specimen Exam Paper These answers are ‘guides Take the time to reference the CCNA curriculum on each of these Tip, the index option allows you to view a whole CCNA course, so you can dip into the section desired
