GRIN – GG’s Predecessor The USDA GRIN system Germplasm Resources Information Network) was used as the “foundation” for GG GRIN GRIN — continuously enhanced since 1986… — recognized internationally for its excellence 3

many genebanks lacked effective technology for managing collection information genebanks interested in adopting GRIN were challenged by the software licensing fees Why the Need for GRIN-Global? 4

GRIN-Global Partners in 2008, the Global Crop Diversity Trust initiated the GRIN-Global project a grant was awarded to USDA and Bioversity International to enhance GRIN to address global germplasm information management needs Trust Bioversity ARS 5

GG was designed as Open Source project supports free or open source database management systems: MySQL, Oracle Express, MS SQL Express, or PostgreSQL by providing source code, GRIN-Global enables genebanks to tailor the application to meet their specific requirements 6

GRIN-Global Environment runs in a Windows environment requires Windows IIS supports four database engines (Microsoft SQL Server*, Oracle, MySQL, or PostgreSQL) versions since currently have been tested for SQL Server only GG is a relational database system -- tables are related by key fields 7

Curator Tool the Curator Tool is designed primarily for curators and genebank staff to create & manage their genebank’s data 11

Search Tool the Search Tool is used by genebank staff to locate their records 12

Public Website the Public Website is a browser-based application designed primarily for external clientele desiring to search the GG database 13 genebank staff also will use the public website as a complement to the Curator Tool

Updater GG administrators use the Updater program to install the server GG components 14

Admin Tool GG administrators use the Admin Tool to manage user accounts, codes, create and edit dataviews, etc. 15
