3 The Need for GRIN-Global Many national genebanks lack effective information technology for documenting & managing collections electronically

4 Why Switch From GRIN? Genebanks interested in adopting GRIN were challenged by software licensing fees

5 GRIN…GRIN-Global In 2008, the Global Crop Diversity Trust awarded ARS a 3-year, $1.4 million grant to address global germplasm information management needs

6 GRIN…GRIN-Global USDA/ARS is devoting more than $1 million of in-kind support to the project Bioversity International will support the deployment of GRIN-Global internationally

7 GRIN-Global Project Mission Create… a new, scalable version of GRIN …powerful, flexible, easy-to-use PGR information management system an effective global network of genebanks Encourage… the use of PGR resources by researchers, breeders, and farmers (producers)

8 Customer Input Public Bulletin Board for 18 months Fall 2009 survey – 444 surveys completed by international and U.S. respondents – Sent more than 600 U.S. CGC email invitations Feedback from presentations

9 Customer Input Survey respondents identified themselves as: researcher / breeder – 66% policy maker – 8% curators – 27% genebank staff – 21% grower / farmer – 8% (Multiple responses were allowed)
