Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO Achieving optimal health using Sensitivity Reduction Technique, Osteopathy & more… Presented by Cheryl Leuthaeuser, D.O. OsteoMed II 7251 Engle Rd. #250 Middleburg Heights, OH 44130 440-239-3438 USAAA 2006 International Conference

At OsteoMed II… Approx. 50% of our patients are children Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO At OsteoMed II… Approx. 50% of our patients are children We utilize a combination of holistic treatments and some traditional methods to achieve wellness for our patients. Overview of services provided for children: Osteopathic manipulation, sensitivity reduction technique (SRT…aka allergy elimination), homeopathic treatment, nutritional testing and supplement counseling. I feel like I have “come home” and come “full circle”…it is an honor to be here and address this group, as it was just two years ago at the last NVIC meeting, that I became a champion for the cause of vaccine-injured children and their parents. I want to open with a quick story about a town in the MidWest…….answer: we would put more ambulances at the bottom of the cliff. Until we STOP the problem of breaking our children, this seems to be the best we can do…put more ambulances at the bottom of the cliff, or in other words, develop treatment protocols to “repair” them after they are broken…. USAAA 2006 International Conference

Objectives: 1. Define SRT and explain treatment methodology Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO 1. Define SRT and explain treatment methodology Discuss Osteopathy and diagnoses that are commonly aided. 3. Briefly discuss commonly used supplements and/or homeopathics. USAAA 2006 International Conference

Conventional Medicine: “Suppresses” the problem Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO Conventional Medicine: “Suppresses” the problem Allergies, Asthma, Eczema: Antihistamines, Inhalers, Steroids ADD, ADHD, Behavioral disorders: Ritalin, Adderal, Strattera, antidepressants, anti-psychotics, etc. Diarrhea, constipation, Irritable bowel syndrome: Anti-diarrheals, laxatives Chronic ear infections: Antibiotics—acutely and long term, myringotomy tubes USAAA 2006 International Conference

At OsteoMed II, we look at the body “differently”… Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO At OsteoMed II, we look at the body “differently”… Statistics have shown that when presented with a new or novel idea, 96% of people will expend their energy defending what they already know; a brave 4% will embrace the idea and celebrate its arrival. What I am about to present is something that will be new and novel to many of you. This is not a “scientific” lecture…it is a clinical one. We don’t have double-blind, placebo-controlled studies to “prove” that this works. We DO have outcome based, real-life RESULTS that we have seen reproducibly over and over in our clinic by 3 doctors and a physician assistant who use this technique to treat 70-80 people per day. So, this is an explanation of our approach. Our goal is to correct the underlying problems USAAA 2006 International Conference

This is the “house” you live in, called “Your Body” Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO This is the “house” you live in, called “Your Body” Bones, Muscles, Organs Anatomy How everything works Physiology What you eat, drink & breathe Biochemistry Energy “Mental/Emotional” “Chemical” ATP “Electromagnetic”— “chi” USAAA 2006 International Conference

Based on this Model, We use the following approach: Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO Based on this Model, We use the following approach: Step #1: FIRST---“Fix the Basement”  Allergy elimination treatments Step #2: “Address the Biochemistry”  Nutritional supplementation  dietary modifications (ie: gluten free/casein free diet, Feingold diet) Step #3: “Normalize the Physiology”  Heavy Metal Detoxification with DMSA  Vaccine detoxification using homeopathy Step #4: “Shore up the Anatomy”  Osteopathic manipulation (may include Cranial Osteopathy) Step #5: Simultaneous specialized therapies (OT, PT, etc.) USAAA 2006 International Conference

Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO Step #1: “ Fix The Basement” Normalizing the electromagnetics: Allergy Elimination Treatments USAAA 2006 International Conference

Allergy Elimination The Critically Important First Step Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO Allergy Elimination The Critically Important First Step Many children have many undiagnosed or untreated food and environmental allergies/intolerance Avoidance is difficult at best; impossible or impractical at worst Untreated allergies adversely effect the functioning of the body’s anatomy, physiology and biochemistry Once “treated”, avoidance is no longer necessary in most cases The treatments are very long lasting, in many cases, permanent Urine caseomorphin and gluteomorphin antibody testing. USAAA 2006 International Conference

How do Allergy Elimination treatments work? Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO How do Allergy Elimination treatments work? All foods, chemicals and environmental particles are considered potential “allergens” All allergens have an electromagnetic charge associated with them For a variety of reasons, disruptions can occur in the body’s life force (electromagnetic) energy, or “chi” The electromagnetic charges of allergens “disrupt” the flow of energy in the acupuncture channels called meridians Chinese medicine theory states: “Where there are ‘energy blockages’, there are symptoms” USAAA 2006 International Conference

How do Allergy Elimination treatments work? Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO How do Allergy Elimination treatments work? This type of “allergic reaction” can neither be explained nor understood through a “Western-medicine” model This is NOT a “conventional” IgE or IgG allergic response and CANNOT be documented as such This is the reason that skin and blood allergy tests can give false negative results, even when a reaction clearly exists The mechanism of action is generally understood through Chinese medicine acupuncture theory USAAA 2006 International Conference

Results of Allergy Elimination Treatments? Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO Results of Allergy Elimination Treatments? Treatments act to “calm” the gut Normalizes the gut, returning alkalinity Spectrum of food choices improve Foods are better absorbed, resulting in weight gain & growth Vitamins and other nutrients are better absorbed Diarrhea slows and constipation is improved or eliminated USAAA 2006 International Conference

Results of Allergy Elimination Treatments Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO Results of Allergy Elimination Treatments Treatments act to “calm” the brain Food and environmental allergies have been documented to cause disruption of the brain waves Treatment involves the use of acupressure on specific acupuncture points After this treatment, the brain can function more appropriately; therefore, other types of behavioral therapies can be more effective USAAA 2006 International Conference

Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO USAAA 2006 International Conference

Results of Allergy Elimination Treatments Clinical Outcomes of a Diagnostic & Treatment Protocol in Allergy/Sensitivity Patients Konrad Kail Clinical Study on Allergy Elimination Study Shows 87.2% of Patients Rate Allergy Elimination as Good to Excellent. This investigation used a technique very similar to the methods used at OsteoMed II Alternative Medicine Review 2001; 6 (2) 188-202

Allergy Elimination Treatments Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO Allergy Elimination Treatments Allergy elimination can be accomplished by practitioners proficient in NAET, Bio-Set, JMT or TBM. OsteoMed II’s approach combines elements from all of these techniques We incorporate our own “distinctions” that we feel make the treatments more effective and require far fewer treatments overall Give it a try. It is non-invasive and can be a highly therapeutic intervention USAAA 2006 International Conference

What to expect at your first visit Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO Muscle response testing otherwise known as kinesiology, applied kinesiology sometimes surrogate testing Treatment vials mostly homeopathic vials that are placed in contact with the skin Acupressure technique 15 minute treatment period USAAA 2006 International Conference

Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO Step #2: “Address The Biochemistry” -Nutritional Supplements -Specialty diets USAAA 2006 International Conference

SUPPLEMENTS Most important: Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO SUPPLEMENTS Most important: Cod liver oil NordicNaturals, Carlson’s or from Kirkman Multivitamin SuperNuThera from Kirkman, Spectrum complete or copper free multi Acidophilus Culturelle; Probiogold,Primal Defense Liquid Zinc bedtime from Kirkman Others to consider: Taurine 500mg/day Digestive Enzyme Bio-Set Chewable or Kirkman, Houston Flax seed oil USAAA 2006 International Conference

SUPPLEMENTS Recommended for some: CoEnzyme Q 10 50 mg/day from Kirkman Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO SUPPLEMENTS Recommended for some: CoEnzyme Q 10 50 mg/day from Kirkman Vitamin C powdered form… from Longevity Plus DMG (dimethyl-glycine) Helps with speech problems & stimulates immune response Works best if given with Folic acid 800 mcg Comes as chewable tablet, powder, liquid, or capsules Dose: 125-500mg/day Egg-based protein powder : from JayRobb.com Comes in Chocolate and Vanilla power 24 gms protein/scoop…no carbs! Mixes well with almond milk or non-dairy yogurt USAAA 2006 International Conference

Do Allergy Elimination Treatments work for casein and gluten? Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO Do Allergy Elimination Treatments work for casein and gluten? Yes!! In most cases, In some cases, NO  The goal then becomes to make child less sensitive so that if s/he ingests one of these substances the response is less. Sometimes the avoidance is necessary for a short time, than the child can add it again. USAAA 2006 International Conference

Feingold Diet Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO Sometimes more helpful than gf/cf, depending on the child. Tends to be helpful in ADD/ADHD Overview of the diet: eliminates food coloring preservatives phenols….and more….. Many individuals are sensitive to the chemicals found in the American diet rather than natural substances like gluten and casein. USAAA 2006 International Conference

GF/CF Diet at OsteoMed II Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO GF/CF Diet at OsteoMed II We “enforce” this on a Case-by-Case basis (currently none of my patients are on both gf/cf after SRT) Allergy Elimination Treatments often stop bowel problems and modifies behavior quickly. We sometimes eliminate Gluten/Casein for 6 weeks and then reintroduce after completion of the Allergy Elimination Treatment for these foods (urine testing is helpful to determine need for elimination of these foods early in the treatments) Observe behavior with/without food in diet USAAA 2006 International Conference

Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO Step #3: “Normalize the Physiology” If necessary Heavy Metal Detoxification with DMSA Viral detoxification using homeopathy USAAA 2006 International Conference

Detoxification of Heavy Metals Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO Detoxification of Heavy Metals Complete allergy elimination series Lab work to check health of liver and kidneys 4-6 wks of supplements prior to beginning chelation with DMSA We usually start with 30mg/kg DMSA challenge Collect urine for 6 hrs Collect SECOND stool specimen Follow DAN protocol of 10mg/kg three times a day for three days every other weekend (maximum 500mg in one dose) (transdermal DMSA 5mg/kg three times a day) Quarterly urine and stool tests to chart progress Chelation series generally lasts 6-18 months USAAA 2006 International Conference

Detoxification of Heavy Metals Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO Detoxification of Heavy Metals Helpful for other metals: Aluminum….add glycine 40mg/kg Also added to some patient protocols at Osteomed II: Use of alpha lipoic acid Use of N-acetyl cysteine Use of homeopathy with metal detox Use of topical glutithione USAAA 2006 International Conference

Detoxification of Viruses Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO Detoxification of Viruses Works on the principle of Isopathy Isopathy is a method of removing the adverse effects of microbes, drugs, chemicals, or other toxins, including vaccines using homeopathy Therefore, it is not based on the “Law of Similars" but the “Science of Identicals” USAAA 2006 International Conference

Using homeopathy “preventively”: called Homeoprophylaxis Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO Using homeopathy “preventively”: called Homeoprophylaxis The remedy alters a person’s sensitivity to a specific antigen, such as a virus or a bacteria Diseases/infections are not suppressed; the susceptibility is changed Products we use: from Apex Energetics USAAA 2006 International Conference

Step #4: “Shore up the Anatomy” Osteopathic Manipulation Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO Step #4: “Shore up the Anatomy” Osteopathic Manipulation USAAA 2006 International Conference

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) Works on the principle that structure and function are integrally related Can be added at any time Safe and gentle for all ages including newborns Painlessly addresses the “anatomy” when used by skilled practitioner Appropriate diagnosis for treatment with OMT: lactation dysfunction, difficult delivery, constipation, headaches, pigeon-toed walkers, post-cranial surgery, post-traumatic seizure disorders, etc. USAAA 2006 International Conference

History of Osteopathic Medicine Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO • Philosophy of Osteopathy was developed in 1874 by Andrew Taylor Still, M.D. • In 1864 Dr. Still was compelled to return to his anatomy and physiology textbooks to search for a way to create wellness. He lost 3 of his children to meningitis and found orthodox medicine offered ineffective treatments. • Dr. Still opened his first school of osteopathic medicine in 1892 • Currently there are 23 colleges of osteopathic medicine • Osteopathic curriculum includes the same basic science courses as M.D. institutions as well as extra training in palpation, structural alignment, and philosophy of osteopathy. USAAA 2006 International Conference

Current Osteopathic Research Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO Current Osteopathic Research • The New England Journal of Medicine, Nov. 4, 1999. The osteopathic - treatment group required significantly less medication and physical therapy for low back pain, than non-treatment group • The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association Feb., 1998. Transient basophilia following the application of lymphatic pump techniques • The American Academy of Osteopathy Journal 8(2):25-33. A pilot study: osteopathic treatment of infants with a suckling dysfunction. Suckling to the point of higher concentration of hind milk (breast emptying) becomes more effective after osteopathic treatment • The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 2005 11 (1). Cranial Manipulation can alter sleep latency and sympathetic nerve activity in humans. Difficult (impossible) to do double blind, placebo controlled research for osteopathic manipulation To date, none for ASD published USAAA 2006 International Conference

Cranial Osteopathy William G. Sutherland Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO Cranial Osteopathy Cranial Osteopathy is an expansion of the general principles of osteopathy which includes a special understanding of the central nervous system and a mechanism called primary respiration. Those who wish to practice Cranial Osteopathy train intensively through post-graduate studies. William Garner Sutherland, DO (1873-1954), discovered, developed and taught Cranial Osteopathy in the early to mid-1900s. Dr. Sutherland referred to his discovery as Osteopathy in the Cranial Field(OCF). He never failed to emphasize that the Cranial Concept was only an extension of, not separate from, Dr. Still's science of osteopathy. Dr. Sutherland was the first to perceive a subtle palpable movement within the bones of the cranium. William G. Sutherland USAAA 2006 International Conference

Why cranial osteopathy versus therapy… Cranial Academy’s explanation of the difference: Are DOs The Only Cranial Practitioners? Many healthcare practitioners including "body workers," massage therapists, physical therapists and occupational therapists, have learned a form of therapy called "Cranio-Sacral Therapy." These cranio-sacral practitioners have been taught simplified techniques that work on a cranial mechanism, but lack the depth and training of a complete osteopathic medical education.Cranio-Sacral Therapy is different than Cranial Osteopathy both in principles and practice. Only a physician (DO / MD), dentist (DDS / DMD) or qualified international DO / MD is eligible to receive training in the osteopathic cranial concept and become a member of The Cranial Academy. To insure that your physician has received quality training in the cranial concept ask if he or she is a member of The Cranial Academy.

Step #5: “Specialized Therapies” Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO Step #5: “Specialized Therapies” USAAA 2006 International Conference

Comprehensive Caregiver/Child Assessment Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO Comprehensive Caregiver/Child Assessment Work with a pediatric, multidisciplinary occupational therapy (OT) team that: Designs intensive interventional programs that combine many different modalities Programs need to functional for school, community and home “practicing” Programs need to include use of “play time” to address problems such as sleep, communication, social participation and eating habits Programs need to be tailored to the individual needs of the child for rapid progress USAAA 2006 International Conference

Comprehensive Caregiver/Child Assessment Cheryl Leuthaeuser, DO Comprehensive Caregiver/Child Assessment Language skills Auditory discrimination Visual spatial/motor processing (ball, bike, skate, swim) Learning/memory skills Educational programming Organizational skills Writing/keyboarding skills Social participation Tactile discrimination Sibling/peer play Tolerance for transition Adaptability Role playing Readiness for groups USAAA 2006 International Conference
