No one is entirely good or entirely evil. Everyone has a bit of both in them.

If good and evil are in the same place, one will eventually win. Good and evil cannot be in the same place for long.

Coexistence of good and evil  Can good and evil exist together?  Does one always have to win?  What examples can we think of where good and evil are in the same place?  Are people essentially good or entirely evil?

There is far less racism in the world than there was when my parents were growing up

Racism, classism, sexism, discrimination, and prejudice  Discrimination: An action  Prejudice: An internal belief  Racism = discrimination + power  Discrimination – an action based on a prejudice  Power – who has access to money, high-paying positions, etc.  Racism is a system. Whites have power over blacks. They discriminate (act on their prejudices) and set up a system in which blacks cannot be as successful.

Classism and Sexism  Racism = discrimination + power based on race  Classism = discrimination + power based on social class  Sexism = discrimination + power based on sex  Who has power in society?

I will learn more about how life works outside of school than I will when I am in class

What does it mean to be an outsider?  What factors make it difficult to fit in somewhere?  Have you ever experienced a time when you did not fit in? OR  Have your ever read about or seen a movie that described someone or something not fitting in? (Not in TKAM)

Themes in TKAM Theme is defined as a main idea or an underlying meaning of a literary work that may be stated directly or indirectly.  We see several important themes arise in TKAM including;  Racism, classism, discrimination, and prejudice  Coexistence of good and evil  Coming-of-age story  Moral education

We began early on in the novel talking about understanding others’ perspectives.  We heard Atticus say “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.”  With this in mind consider the theme of Racism, classism, discrimination, and prejudice.

What does it mean to be an outsider?  What factors make it difficult to fit in somewhere?  Have you ever experienced a time when you did not fit in? OR  Have your ever read about or seen a movie that describe someone or something not fitting in?

 Having “outsider status” in TKAM is brought on by many different things and for many different reasons. Some are more lighthearted and have little impact on the lives of the characters, but others can have an immense impact on their lives.  Ex. Scout wanting to fit in and hang out with her brother and Dill.
