Which Sun Protection Is Best For Me?

What is UV Light? Ultraviolet radiation is a dangerous, high- energy form of light that is invisible to the human eye Humans cannot sense UV radiation until its damage has already been done, evidenced as a sunburn

What is UV Light? Read the passage “Understanding UV Radiation” Discuss the “What Do You Think” prompts at the end of the passage

What is your skin phototype? Your skin phototype measures your risk of skin damage from exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet light. This is based on your complexion and your skin’s normal reaction to the skin. Complete the survey to determine your skin phototype

Your Skin Phototype I: Pale skin, red or blond hair, blue or green eyes; may have a lot of freckles. You always burn and never get a tan. II: Pale skin, blond hair, light or dark eyes. You usually burn, but sometimes get a tan. III: Light skin, usually darker hair and brown eyes. You sometimes burn but usually get a tan IV: Light brown skin, brown or black hair, brown eyes. You rarely get sunburned and tan easily. V: Medium brown to dark skin, brown or black hair and brown eyes. You rarely or never get sunburned.

How does my phototype determine my burn time in the sun? Your skin type, together with the amount of UV you are exposed to, determine your risk of skin damage or skin cancer from the sun. Find your local UV Index by accessing the US Environmental Protection Agency website at

Discussion 1.How long can you stay out in the sun today without burning? 2.The “Minutes to Skin Damage” graph lets you know how many minutes your skin can tolerate the sun before burning, but what factors doesn’t it take into account?

Understanding UV and how to protect yourself from it Read the article “Sun Protection” Discuss the “What Do You Think” prompts at the end of the passages

Observe the behavior of UV absorbing and emitting devices 1. UV Detection beads 2. Phosphorescent beads/stars/vinyl 3. LED flashlights

Design An Experiment Test the question... Which Sun Protection Is Best For Me?

Requirements In your lab groups... Design an experiment to show what type of protective gear is best for protection from UV light Run your experiment in class this week Present your findings to the class as a public outreach to get information out to other students (Posters, Video, Event, etc)

Your presentation must include… 1.Question/Problem 2.Background Information/Research about the question 3.Hypothesis 4.Experiment (Include your control and variables) 5.Results (Chart, Tables, Pictures) 6.Conclusion (Include sources of error) Each section is worth 5 points!
