The Universal Invitation GOD URGES THE JEWS TO RETURN TO HIM. In this morning’s text,

The Universal Invitation In the Book of Isaiah, God promises punishment.

The Universal Invitation In the Book of Isaiah, God promises punishment. ◦ “Hear the word of the LORD of hosts: Behold, the days are coming, when all that is in your house, and that which your fathers have stored up till this day, shall be carried to Babylon. Nothing shall be left, says the LORD” (Is 39:5-6, ESV).

The Universal Invitation In the Book of Isaiah, God promises punishment. ◦ Is 39:5-6. ◦ Immediately after the promise of judgment, God comforts his people (Is 40-55).

The Universal Invitation In the Book of Isaiah, God promises punishment. ◦ Is 39:5-6. ◦ Immediately after the promise of judgment, God comforts his people (Is 40-55).  God promises judgment, but he also offers hope & love.

The Universal Invitation In the Book of Isaiah, God promises punishment. ◦ Is 39:5-6. ◦ Immediately after the promise of judgment, God comforts his people (Is 40-55).  God promises judgment, but he also offers hope & love.  “Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness” (Rom 11:22, ESV).

The Universal Invitation God’s severity is great!

The Universal Invitation God’s severity is great! ◦ One day, Jesus will destroy this world & punish the wicked.

The Universal Invitation God’s severity is great! ◦ One day, Jesus will destroy this world & punish the wicked: “The Lord Jesus [will be] revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus” (2 Thess 1:7-8, ESV).

The Universal Invitation God’s severity is great! ◦ One day, Jesus will destroy this world & punish the wicked: (2 Thess 1:7-8). ◦ “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who is seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb, for the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?” (Rev 6:16-17, ESV).

The Universal Invitation CAN YOU IMAGINE GOD’S WRATH AT THE END OF THE AGE? If John depicts God’s wrath upon the Roman Empire in that way,

The Universal Invitation God’s kindness is also great.

The Universal Invitation God’s kindness is also great. ◦ “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Rev 5:8, ESV).

The Universal Invitation God’s kindness is also great. ◦ “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Rev 5:8, ESV). ◦ Even though we deserve God’s wrath, God sent his Son to take it for us.

The Universal Invitation God had promised the Jews that they would see his severity—the Babylonian Captivity.

The Universal Invitation God had promised the Jews that they would see his severity—the Babylonian Captivity. But, in this morning’s text, God offers “THE UNIVERSAL INVITATION” to his kindness.

The Universal Invitation THE INVITATION’S PARTICIPANTS v 1a

The Universal Invitation “Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters” (v 1a, ESV).

The Universal Invitation In Hebrew, the word “Ho!” is used here as an attention- getting device.

There are also five imperatives (commands) in verse 1. ◦ The imperatives & “Ho!” demonstrate the urgency of this invitation. ◦ There is no time for delay.  “You do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes” (Js 4:14, ESV).

What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes” (Js 4:14, ESV).  “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion” (Heb 3:15, ESV).

The Universal Invitation The invitation’s participants are those who are thirty— only those who are thirsty may come.

The Universal Invitation Israel is a dry land &, in the summer, those who traveled, would face parching thirst.

The Universal Invitation Israel is a dry land &, in the summer, those who traveled, would face parching thirst. ◦ The people to whom Isaiah wrote understood thirst quite well.

The Universal Invitation Israel is a dry land &, in the summer, those who traveled, would face parching thirst. ◦ The people to whom Isaiah wrote understood thirst quite well. ◦ The idea of this verse seems to be the ancient water vendors who would sell water to passers-by.

The Universal Invitation The desire for God is often compared to thirst.

The Universal Invitation The desire for God is often compared to thirst. ◦ “My soul thirsts for God, for the living God” (Ps 42:2, ESV).

The Universal Invitation The desire for God is often compared to thirst. ◦ “My soul thirsts for God, for the living God” (Ps 42:2, ESV). ◦ “I stretch out my hands to you; my soul thirsts for you like a parched land” (Ps 143:6, ESV).

The Universal Invitation Those who thirst shall find their needs satisfied.

The Universal Invitation Those who thirst shall find their needs satisfied. ◦ “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied” (Mt 5:6, ESV). ◦ “Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst’” (Jn 6:35, ESV).

The Universal Invitation ARE YOU THIRSTING FOR GOD?

The Universal Invitation THE INVITATION’S PRODUCT v 1b

The Universal Invitation “He who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price” (v 1b, ESV).

The Universal Invitation Wine & milk often stand for spiritual blessings.

The Universal Invitation Wine & milk often stand for spiritual blessings. ◦ God promised to deliver the Israelites “out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey” (Ex 3:8, ESV).

The Universal Invitation Wine & milk often stand for spiritual blessings. ◦ God promised to deliver the Israelites “out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey” (Ex 3:8, ESV). ◦ Wisdom: “Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed. Leave your simple ways, and live, and walk in the way of insight” (Prov 9:5-6, ESV).

The Universal Invitation Jesus, likewise, uses the imagery of food & drink to offer spiritual blessings.

The Universal Invitation Jesus, likewise, uses the imagery of food & drink to offer spiritual blessings. ◦ “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (Jn 4:13-14, ESV).

◦ “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water’” (Jn 7:37-38, ESV).

The Universal Invitation DO YOU KNOW THE SPIRITUAL BLESSINGS GOD OFFERS?

The Universal Invitation THE INVITATION’S PRICE vv 1c-2

The Universal Invitation “Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food” (vv 1c-2, ESV).

The Universal Invitation THE SPIRITUAL BLESSINGS GOD OFFERS ARE ABSOLUTELY FREE.

The Universal Invitation God asks the Israelites why they spend money for what is not bread & spend their wages on what does not satisfy.

The Universal Invitation God asks the Israelites why they spend money for what is not bread & spend their wages on what does not satisfy. ◦ This verse likely deals with the Israelites’ preoccupation with Babylon.

The Universal Invitation God asks the Israelites why they spend money for what is not bread & spend their wages on what does not satisfy. ◦ This verse likely deals with the Israelites’ preoccupation with Babylon. ◦ When they could have free spiritual blessings, why would they spend their money on what could never satisfy?

The Universal Invitation HOW MANY SPEND THEIR LIVES IN WHAT WILL NOT SATISFY?

The Universal Invitation HOW MANY SPEND THEIR LIVES IN WHAT WILL NOT SATISFY? Are you spending your life in what will not satisfy?

The Universal Invitation True satisfaction can only be found in God.

The Universal Invitation True satisfaction can only be found in God. ◦ “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows” (Ps 23:5, ESV).

The Universal Invitation True satisfaction can only be found in God. ◦ “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows” (Ps 23:5, ESV). ◦ “Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need” (Mal 3:10, ESV).

The Universal Invitation God offered free spiritual blessings to the Israelites.

The Universal Invitation God offered free spiritual blessings to the Israelites. Spiritual fulfillment comes freely to us.

The Universal Invitation God offered free spiritual blessings to the Israelites. Spiritual fulfillment comes freely to us. ◦ We “are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Rom 3:24, ESV).

Spiritual fulfillment comes freely to us. ◦ We “are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Rom 3:24, ESV). ◦ “Let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price” (Rev 22:17, ESV).

The Universal Invitation Simply because salvation is a free gift does NOT mean that we need to do nothing to obtain it.

The Universal Invitation Simply because salvation is a free gift does NOT mean that we need to do nothing to obtain it. ◦ There is no way that we can earn salvation.

The Universal Invitation Simply because salvation is a free gift does NOT mean that we need to do nothing to obtain it. ◦ There is no way that we can earn salvation.  “When the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit” (Tit 3:4-5, ESV).

 No amount of good works will get me into heaven!

The Universal Invitation Simply because salvation is a free gift does NOT mean that we need to do nothing to obtain it. ◦ There is no way that we can earn salvation. ◦ But, the free gift can ONLY be accepted through my obedience to Jesus.

The Universal Invitation Simply because salvation is a free gift does NOT mean that we need to do nothing to obtain it. ◦ There is no way that we can earn salvation. ◦ But, the free gift can ONLY be accepted through my obedience to Jesus.  “Being made perfect, [Jesus] became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him” (Heb 5:9, ESV).

 If I refuse obedience to Jesus, I refuse the free gift of salvation.

“A pardon is a slip of paper, the value of which is determined by the acceptance of the person to be pardoned. If it is refused, it is no pardon. George Wilson must be hanged.”

The Universal Invitation ARE YOU REFUSING YOUR PARDON?

The Universal Invitation THE INVITATION’S PROMISE v 3

The Universal Invitation “Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live; and I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David” (v 3, ESV).

The Universal Invitation God promises that those who hear shall live.

The Universal Invitation God promises that those who hear shall live. God promises a full life, too.

The Universal Invitation God promises that those who hear shall live. God promises a full life, too. ◦ “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly” (Jn 10:10, ESV).

The Universal Invitation God promises that those who hear shall live. God promises a full life, too. ◦ “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly” (Jn 10:10, ESV). ◦ Do you have that full life?

The Universal Invitation THE INVITATION’S PLEA vv 6-7

The Universal Invitation “Seek the LORD while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the LORD, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon” (vv 6-7, ESV).

The Universal Invitation The Lord urges people to seek him before it is too late.

The Universal Invitation The Lord urges people to seek him before it is too late. ◦ It is obvious that the Lord wants to be found.

The Universal Invitation The Lord urges people to seek him before it is too late. ◦ It is obvious that the Lord wants to be found.  Isaiah says that he can be.  In the days of these Israelites, he was found through the work & words of Isaiah; today, he is found in Scripture.

The Universal Invitation The Lord urges people to seek him before it is too late. ◦ It is obvious that the Lord wants to be found. ◦ There is an urgency to this plea, for time is not unlimited.

The Universal Invitation The Lord urges people to seek him before it is too late. ◦ It is obvious that the Lord wants to be found. ◦ There is an urgency to this plea, for time is not unlimited.  “Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Cor 6:2, ESV).

The Universal Invitation The wicked is urged to forsake his ways & thoughts.

The Universal Invitation The wicked is urged to forsake his ways & thoughts. ◦ “Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy” (Prov 28:13, ESV). ◦ “Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us” (Heb 12:1, ESV).

The Universal Invitation HAVE YOU FORSAKEN YOUR SINS?

The Universal Invitation After the Israelites forsook their sins, they were to turn to God.

The Universal Invitation After the Israelites forsook their sins, they were to turn to God. ◦ “Return to me, and I will return to you, says the LORD of hosts” (Mal 3:7, ESV).

The Universal Invitation After the Israelites forsook their sins, they were to turn to God. ◦ “Return to me, and I will return to you, says the LORD of hosts” (Mal 3:7, ESV). ◦ “You were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls” (1 Pt 2:25, ESV).

The Universal Invitation HAVE YOU RETURNED TO GOD?

The Universal Invitation If the Israelites would return to God, the Lord would forgive them.

The Universal Invitation If the Israelites would return to God, the Lord would forgive them. ◦ “I, I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins” (Is 43:25, ESV).
