VTL Application Arena iSCSI RAID speaker: Jeff Weng April, 2009

Agenda  VTL Application (PM 9:30~ 10:00) ->VTL Introduction ->VTL advantage -> VTL assortment  iSCSI Product Introduction (PM 10:00~10:30) ->iSCSI RAID Specification ->Software Feature: MPIO ->Software Feature: Snapshot  Live Demo (PM 10:40~ 11:40) ->SS-6603S or SA-4503S installed FalconStor VTL software  Q & A (PM 11:40~ 12:00)

VTL Introduction  Virtual Tape Library (VTL) is a data storage virtualization technology used typically for accelerating backup and restore purposes.  VTL generally consists of a Virtual Tape appliance or server, and software which emulates traditional tape devices and formats. Data is deposited onto disk array drives just as it would onto a tape library.  Most current VTL solutions use SAS or SATA disk arrays as the primary storage component. The use of array enclosures increases the scalability of the solution by allowing the addition of more disk drives and enclosures to increase the storage capacity.  By backing up data to disks array instead of tapes, VTL often increases performance of both backup and recovery operations. the data stored on the VTL's disk array is exported to other media, such as physical tapes, for disaster recovery purposes. (scheme called D2D2T)

VTL Backup schema  D2T traditional disk to tape backup flow  D2D2T disk to disk to tape enhanced backup flow 250~350 MB/s Great performance speed up service level Easy to load require data Easy to have remote backup / DR 1 Gb/s LAN Database Application server Backup server Tape Library Slow down process Hard to retrieve data Difficult to enable DR 10~20 MB/s Data from a backup server copied to tape library Fibre / iSCSI SAN or NAS storage Backup server + VTL Tape Library Database Application server 1 Gb/s LAN

VTL Advantage Typeadvantagedisadvantagesimulation applicationbenefit Disk 1.Read/write fast 2.record data validity 3.Random access 4.Fast data recovery High cost fragile structure VTL the hard disk simulated into the tape, in order to make enterprise data recovery faster 。 based on the nature of the data , the data separately put different speed and cost of storage media , make VTL and tape can be complementary to each entity 。 Tape 1.long-term preservation 2.low cost Read/write slow Sequence access Slow data recovery Digital reservation using tape simulation software into disk array to create the largest storage space 。

VTL Type  Distinguished by VTL architecture  Backup software VTL (1st generation)(1st generation)  Application Server VTL (2nd generation)(2nd generation)  Disk Array VTL (3rd generation)(3rd generation)  Distinguished by demand environment TypedefinitionVendor Mainframe VTLsuitable for large host virtual tape device IBM 、 Sun 、 Fujitsu Siemens 、 HDS Open Systems VTL Support mainframe 、 open system 。 And also support specific operation system 、 backup software 、 tape simulation and SAN network (FC 、 iSCSI 、 NAS) EMC 、 Fujitsu Siemens 、 HDS 、 HP 、 NetApp

Backup Software type Architecture The backup software integrated VTL software, in order to simply rely on software to achieve the tape simulation purpose Advantage As long as storage space is enough to simulate tape cabinet quantity 、 tape quantity and every capacity size of tape. Disadvantage Unable to use and match other brands software vendor Bakbone 、 CA Web ServerMail ServerDatabase VTL Disk ArrayBackup Server FC/SCSI Architecture LAN VTL Software

Application Server type Application Server type architecture Through VTL software installed in PC server which provided internal disk capacity or external disk array space, and then make virtual tape space for backup data 。 advantage 1.costs are relatively cheap : software architecture in a standard x 86 platform and Linux operating system 。 2.More flexible : lower limit for storage equipment, as long as server adopt any SCSI 、 iSCSI or fibre interface of disk array connected with backup server which also support SCSI 、 iSCSI or fibre channel 。 vendor FalconStor 、 Sun 、 Maxxan Customer base Mostly small and medium business company Fibre / iSCSI Web ServerMail Server Backup Server LAN Architecture VTL Disk Array Database VTL Software

Disk Array type Architecture Through simulation software which internal build-in RAID controller will make storage space simulate as tape library cabinet 。 advantage Storage capacity is usually getting above dozens of TB , even up to hundreds of TB 。 vendor EMC 、 HP 、 IBM Copan 、 Quantum 、 NetApp Sepaton Customer baseMostly large enterprises company Web ServerMail Server LAN Database Backup Server VTL Disk Array FC/SCSI VTL Software Architecture

MPIO Connection Dual port with MPIO ( host has 2 LAN port, Read or Write in One UDV )  Direct Connection  Through Switching HUB Gigabit Switch SA-4503S/SS-6603S Host SA-4503S/SS-6603S

A host with dual LAN ports connects cables to SA-4503S or SS-6603S Create VG and UDV mapping the host Installing “Microsoft iSCSI initiator”, install MPIO driver at the same time Logon to target separately on each port. When logon to target, check ‘Enable multi-path’ START MPIO mode can be selected on Targets  Details  Devices  Advanced Select win2003 device manager to verify iSCSI disk Then MPIO setting is done END MPIO configure flow chart

Snapshot Feature  Copy-on-Write – Copy “Difference” for a point-of-time  Reserve 20% of UDV as snapshot space  Up to 512 Snapshot volume on SS series  Up to 32 Snapshot volume on SA series  When Snapshot space is full, – Full warning message, – Replace the oldest Snapshot  When delete Snapshot UDV, it will also delete older Snapshot UDV related to it.

Snapshot function can be selected on Volume config  User data volume  Snapshot space Input snapshot volume capacity, Reserve 20% of UDV as snapshot space Select UDV, and then press “Snapshot” button Plan schedule, and when time up to star to do snapshot Scheduling? YES No Snapshot configure flow chart START END

Before rollback, dismount file system first. Select Volume config  User data volume press “Rollback” button Select the snapshot UDV for rollback Rollback configure flow chart START END
