Osmosis Lab HELP PAGE

Name, Date, period Unique # Title: Osmosis Egg Lab

I. Problem: What effect will hypertonic, hypotonic, and isotonic solutions have on an egg (our model of a human cell)?

II. Hypothesis I think that …..

III. Materials 13 eggs, vinegar, distilled water, salt, sugar, corn syrup, tap water, paper towels, beakers, spoon, digital balance, weighing cup, marker, masking tape

IV: Procedure First submerged the eggs in vinegar to remove the calcium from the shell and leave just the membrane. Then we placed eggs in different solutions ranging from all corn syrup, to a combination of sugar and water, to all distilled water. We also completed a side experiment comparing 3 salt solutions, and tap vs. distilled water.

V. Data/ Observations (see attached) SAMPLE Egg mass before Egg mass after Change % chg

VI: Conclusion Paragraph 1 What is the difference between diffusion and osmosis? Paragraph 2 Was the corn syrup hyper, hypo or isotonic? Was the distilled water, hyper-, hypo-, or isotonic? Of all the sugar solutions, which one came closest to isotonic? Did tap water behave exactly like distilled water? If not was it hyper-/ iso-/ or hypotonic compared to distilled?

Paragraph 3 5. Would you say Salt A, B, C were hyper- iso- or hypotonic? Which one contained the most solute? Is sugar the only substance that can be used to make a hypertonic environment? If not what else can be used? Was the isotonic solution made correctly? How do you know? What should have happened?

Paragraph 4 7. If you are stuck on a raft on the ocean, and are thirsty, explain what you should or should not do, to stay alive the maximum amount of time possible, in hopes of a rescue. Make sure to explain the answer, on a cellular level in terms of osmosis. 8. Can you die from drinking too much water? What type of environment does this put your cells in? How will you cells respond? What fatal condition might this cause?

Extra Credit: 1. The cells in your large intestine absorb water by osmosis. If there is too much chloride (solute) present in your intestine what condition will this cause? WHY? (diarrhea or constipation) 2. If there is Not enough chloride present in the intestine what will this cause? WHY? (diarrhea or constipation) 3. Speculate why in beach towns down the shore they don’t have sprawling green lush lawns…. Like we do up in North Jersey: (The answer must relate to plant cells and osmosis)
