A Brief History Lesson John Dawkins, A Fair Chance For All Education and training are vital factors in providing opportunities for people from disadvantaged groups people from low socio-economic backgrounds continue to be under-represented in higher education:  sector LSES Access rate = 16.05% (2008)  Griffith LSES Access rate = (2008)  Population reference point = 25 % (2001 Census) Student Services – Student Equity Services

Review of Australian Higher Education (Bradley) Australia is falling behind other countries in performance and investment in higher education.... The nation will need more well-qualified people if it is to anticipate and meet the demands of a rapidly moving global economy... To increase the numbers participating we must also look to members of groups currently under-represented within the system, that is, those disadvantaged by the circumstances of their birth: Indigenous people, people with low socio- economic status, and those from regional and remote areas. Student Services – Student Equity Services

Government Response 2009 Transforming Australia’s Higher Education System Higher education is integral to achieving the Government’s vision of a stronger and fairer Australia. It fuels economic development, productivity and high skilled jobs and supports Australia’s role as a middle power and leader in the region… the Australian Government will ensure that more students are supported and encouraged to participate and that the benefits of higher education are genuinely available to all Australians with the drive and aptitude.
