Anticipation Guides A Pre-Reading Strategy

► Skilled readers try to anticipate what the text is about before they begin reading … they look at the cover, title, genre, author, headings, graphs, length, print size, etc … … they look at the cover, title, genre, author, headings, graphs, length, print size, etc … ► Dependent or struggling readers often do not pay attention to those factors – they get a text and they just begin reading

What are Anticipation Guides ? ► Anticipation Guides are a set of a generalizations related to the theme of the selection ► These guides activate students’ prior knowledge, encourage them to make a personal connection to what they will be reading and interact with the text before they begin reading
