1 Teaching reading In your curriculum

2 Teaching Reading in Your Curriculum
Teaching students how to remember and reuse the information you ask them to read.

3 Teaching students to think

4 Identify what students are struggling with
List questions on the board or on butcher paper hanging on the walls around the room. Model for students how you look for the answer in the text. Have students look up answers for the questions they find interesting and write the answers they found underneath the questions.

5 Identify what students are struggling with
Point out the process. How did you find the answer? Looked for bolded words Scanned the text for keywords Reread paragraphs on the topic in question

6 Anticipation Guide Find out what they know Get them to use prior knowledge Word Choices: List Bow Stern Your first thought Definition Actual Answer Rear of the ship Front of the ship Tilting or leaning

7 Grade 8 Math Summative Task
Anticipation Guide Grade 8 Math Summative Task Before Statement After Agree Disagree The total length of the outside curves (i.e. the bold parts) is 3 times the circumference of one of the circles. 2. You will have more pizza to eat if you buy the original on the left instead either of the other two choices. 3. If you double the length of each side of a square, then the area is also doubled.

8 Anticipation Guide Article about computers in the workplace
Directions: Read each statement. If you believe that a statement is true, place a check in the Agree column. If you believe the statement is false, place a check in the Disagree column. Be ready to explain your choices. Agree Disagree _____ 1.   The average worker in the United States spends more than 2 hours a day using computers in the workplace. 2.   It is OK for companies to monitor its employees’ use of the Internet. 3.   Most companies do not expect their new employees to be computer literate until after the company trains them.

10 Chapter on the Life Cycle
Facts in the text Why is this important? 1. A producer gets energy from the sun and uses it to produce food and oxygen. 1. Plants are the only producers because they make their own food and oxygen. Animals need other things such as plants to survive therefore they can’t be producers. Do I Really Have to Teach Reading, Content Comprehension, Cris Tovani, Copyright 2004

16 Using Context Clues to Figure Out New Words
Since oil seeps deep into gravel and rock, workers brought in bulldozers to churn up hidden oil globs, then applied chemicals to break apart oil molecules. But ultimately the natural flushing action of waves – in which sunlight and oxygen naturally decomposes oil particles – proved more efficient than all the mop, sponges, power hoses, and well-meaning human effort (p12, Science World, March 20, 2000, vol. 56, #12) ∘ Read the preceding sentence. ∘ Talk your reasoning through in front of the class. “I don’t see a clue in this sentence. The sentence before says chemicals were used to break apart oil molecules. That’s what the waves, sun, and oxygen did. So decompose must mean break apart.” Teaching Reading in Social Studies, Science, and Math by Laura Robb

17 Using Context Clues to Figure Out New Words
Use prefix/suffix knowledge to figure out the meaning of a word. Equi = equal Equation – asserting the equality of two quantities Equilateral – having all sides equal Equator - a circle separating a surface into two congruent parts Equilibrium - a state of rest or balance due to the equal action of opposing forces.
