Background Information World War II began in 1939 with the German invasion of Poland. Norway, Denmark, and Sweden attempted to stay neutral in the war. However, on April 9, 1940, Germany invaded Norway and Denmark. The Danish Resistance against the Nazis was very strong. Denmark saved almost its entire population of 7,000 Jews from the Nazis.

Definition: The murder of more than six million Jews in concentration camps during World War II. But no one really knew what was going on…

On December 7, 1941, Japanese planes dropped bombs on the American ships docked at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.

Congress declared war on Japan, and entered World War II.

WWII= Changes in Technology Airplanes dropped bombs and soldiers with parachutes. Antiaircraft guns were developed. Radar helped detect enemies. New medicines, like penicillin and sulfa, helped the wounded. Chemicals like DDT kill mosquitoes and other disease carrying insects.

Atomic Bomb Dropped! President Truman ordered the first atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, Three days later, another bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan. After Japan surrendered, the Allies celebrated V-J Day (Victory over Japan Day.) World War II Ends!
