Grade 1 Service Project: A Reflection Ms. Kelly and Ms. Fiona’s Grade 1 Classes

One of the best things about grade 1 is learning to read and having stories read to us.

Our teachers told us that some children don’t have the opportunity to read because they don’t have a chance to attend school or because they have no books.

We’ve been learning that as ethical contributors to a global society it is our responsibility to help others.

We learned about 2 people trying to spread the joy of reading to children living in poor countries around the world. Bonnie Campbell Hill John Wood

We were inspired to take action and decided to organize a gift jar sale in support of Bonnie’s Big Idea and Room to Read.

We created a Power Point presentation to teach the RVIS school community about Room to Read and Bonnie’s Big Idea. We asked for their help.

We reflected on what it would be like not to have books to read. Then we wrote class poems about a world without books.

We looked for recipes and collected money for supplies.

Ms. Kelly ordered a copy of Zak the Yak to be shared with each class before the sale.

We used the common room for an afternoon of gift jar production. A big thanks to our volunteers!

We prepared for the sale. We made posters. We set up the presentation room. We collected plastic bags. We made sure we had change.

Finally, the BIG day arrived! We sold over 50 copies of Zak the Yak! By the end of the day we had sold every single jar!

We had a bit of help from our pre-k friends too! Pre-k donated just over 23 BD, that’s a lot at only 100 fils per glass of “lemoneuss”!

Mr. Des helped us make our donation to Bonnie’s Big Idea and Room to Read.

Thanks for letting us use the credit card Mr. Des!

We are very proud of the RVIS community! WOW! (click here to visit the website and see for yourself)
