Tony Doyle - University of Glasgow Major Deliverables  Prototype IMar 2002  Performance and scalability testing of components of the computing fabric (clusters, disk storage, mass storage system, system installation, system monitoring) using straightforward physics applications. Testing of the job scheduling and data replication software from the first DataGrid release (M9).  Prototype IIMar 2003  Prototyping of the integrated local computing fabric, with emphasis on scaling, reliability and resilience to errors. Performance testing of LHC applications. Distributed HEP and other science application models using the second DataGrid release (M21).  Prototype IIIMar 2004  Full scale testing of the LHC computing model with fabric management and Grid management software for Tier-0 and Tier-1 centres, with some Tier-2 components. This will use the software from the final DataGrid release (M33). M9 important: working demonstrators (public spending review) need to ensure key areas are visible

Tony Doyle - University of Glasgow Technical Planning …next collab meeting (M11) Need to monitor progress… 3-month report = requirement of all GridPP posts

Tony Doyle - University of Glasgow Project Management Board  Project Leader Tony Doyle  Deputy Project Leader John Gordon  Chair of the CB Steve Lloyd  Technical LiaisonPete Clarke  EU DataGrid LiaisonRobin Middleton  Roles not yet ratified by CB  Chair of the TB Appoint as soon as PMB constituted IMPORTANT  Resource Manager Dave Britton  Experiments Chair Nick Brook  Experiments Deputy ?  CERN Liaison Les Robertson  e-Science Director (in Att) Neil Geddes  Final PMB structure determined by appointment...  Working methods determined quickly via 1 day meeting in Sept...

Tony Doyle - University of Glasgow PMB Meetings  Frequency - once per week (fixed weekly slot, e.g. 1pm)  Agenda circulated 3 hours before (10am) - web page with links  Duration - 1 hour, via multi-site VC, guillotined  Chair - Project Leader  Agenda items sent to PL = heading + proposed outcome  Order of business determined by Chair  Draft minutes later that day (update of Agenda web page)  Minutes of all meetings available (GridPP PMB password protected) via web 1 day later  Actions listed as e.g.  No.DescriptionInitiated WhoTargetCompleted  1.1 meeting web site Aug 20 TBDAug 26Aug 26  Actions ordered by completed, short-term, long-term (requiring periodic updates)  Review meeting methods formally after 3 months - external CB report?

Tony Doyle - University of Glasgow Project Leader Role I  1. Establishes and maintains the Project Management Board, reflecting the set of GridPP deliverables and the current status of the project.  2. Chairs the Project Management Meetings.  3. Organises the Collaboration Meetings.  4. Identifies and builds upon technical strengths in middleware.  5. Establishes project management reporting mechanisms to monitor UK-specific project development, as well as determining dependencies from CERN and elsewhere.  6. Ensures that the project is managed using appropriate management tools.  7. Ensures that GridPP deliverables are defined and met.

Tony Doyle - University of Glasgow Project Leader Role II  8. Liaises with the National e-Science Centre and ensures participation of GridPP members in the e-Science programmes.  9. Establishes and encourages participation in training/development where required.  10. Ensures that GridPP leads the Grid effort in the UK and is held up as a flagship project in middleware integration.  11. Ensures that GridPP is visible externally.  12. Monitors external developments in order to recognise overlapping solutions and encourage standards.  13. Influences middleware development elsewhere in the UK such that it is focussed on meeting increasingly large- scale data challenges, with increasing persistance.

Tony Doyle - University of Glasgow Project Leader Role III  14. Reports back to the Collaboration Board, via three- monthly reports, summarising the current status and establishing goals for the following three months.  15. Reports back to PPARC annually.  16. Determines a long-term strategy (beyond 3 years).  17. Identifies additional funding possibilities and initiates funding proposals.  18. Engenders a pioneering spirit.  19. Responds to the requirements of all those who contribute to GridPP R&D.

Tony Doyle - University of Glasgow First Rule of PMB?  There are no rules in PMB…  There are Roles.. .. Agenda .. Actions  Everyone should identify shortcomings… e.g.  1. TB Chair appointment procedure  2. EU DataGrid liaison ratification from CB  3. PMB Admin. Assistance reqd.?  coordinating diaries?,  minutes?,  actions?,  organisation of meetings,  preparation of documents etc.  Propose: part time admin. assistant (~10-2), cost ~£10k p.a.?

Tony Doyle - University of Glasgow CERN Liaison Role I In Collaboration with the PMB members:  Resource planning and reporting  agree on the usage of the material and human resources of Workgroup K within the LHC Computing Grid project teams at CERN;  define milestones and deliverables for Workgroup K to  ensure that the activities and developments at CERN are complementary to and integrated with the work of the other workpackages;  provide an agreed level of accountability and progress monitoring and reporting for the GridPP resources invested at CERN.

Tony Doyle - University of Glasgow CERN Liaison Role II  Integration of CERN and GridPP activities  liaise between GridPP and the LHC Computing Grid project (i.e. the wider activities for LHC computing performed at CERN and elsewhere - not just the activities funded by GridPP at CERN) to  ensure that GridPP is aware of related developments and other activities, and ensure that the LHC Grid project is fully aware of the activities of GridPP;  help to identify and bring to the attention of the PMB potential areas of development where GridPP could take a lead within the wider LHC computing and grid activities;  identify areas where there are overlapping developments or other conflicts between the work of GridPP and other organisations and projects active in developments for the LHC Computing Grid, and seek satisfactory solutions;  foster close relations between the Tier centres in the UK and the staff of the Tier 0+1 centre at CERN.

Tony Doyle - University of Glasgow CERN Liaison Role III  Visibility of GridPP within the CERN community  ensure that the contributions to LHC of GridPP, both at CERN and in the UK, are regularly brought to the attention of high-level CERN committees and management bodies;  where opportunities arise organise assistance with publicity, demonstrations and other PR activities of GridPP within the CERN/LHC community.  GridPP funded staff at CERN  ensure that the staff funded by GridPP at CERN maintain active links with the rest of the GridPP project and with the universities.  Participation in GridPP Management  contribute to the general planning, monitoring and problem resolution activities of the PMB

Tony Doyle - University of Glasgow Issues  2nd Collab. Mtg  Monday 5th - Tuesday 6th November  Edinburgh (NeSC. Local organiser is Steve Playfer).  NeSC has one 150 seat lecture theatre and 2 rooms which can be joined into into 1, housing ~50 each.  This will be circulated to the collab. next week as a proposal, unless you cannot attend.  Please let me know if you CAN'T attend. Assumed OK.  Synchronising diaries is a problem   (cost e.g. server+10 users =1k).  Any better suggestions?

Tony Doyle - University of Glasgow Recruitment Timetable?  8th October - EB input deadline (just after GGF3).  19th October - TAG assessment document  26th October - PMB definition of tasks inc. allocation of posts to Working Groups  - first review of CERN posts  2nd November - Tender document  5-6th November - Collaboration Meeting  30th November- Deadline for submission  7th December - PRSC mtg.  14th December- summary document submitted to PPARC  outcomes communicated to groups  - second review of CERN posts
