Presentation transcript:

Thanksgiving America’s Holiday Hi, I am Tom let me tell you a story

The Journey Begins The Pilgrims were told to leave England. Before the Pilgrims hired her, the Mayflower was a trading ship with France; before that, she was in the fish trade with Norway.

The Journey The trip to America was long and hard. There were storms and the ship was really crowded. There was one baby born during the crossing of the Mayflower.     Hi, my name is Oceanus Hopkins

It took the Mayflower 66 days to reach Massachusetts.

When the Pilgrims got to America, it was winter and there was no food or houses. Many of the pilgrims died from sickness and starvation during their first harsh winter in America in 1620.

WHEN THE PILGRIMS ARRIVED THE INDIANS WELCOMED THEM

TAUGHT THE PILGRIMS HOW TO THE NEXT SPRING, THE NEARBY INDIANS TAUGHT THE PILGRIMS HOW TO PLANT CORN FISH HUNT

The Indians also taught the Pilgrims how to build homes in the wilderness.

Governor William Bradford invited Chief Massasoit and his tribesmen for the 1st Thanksgiving Feast. They were thankful for help the Indians gave them. The Indians taught them how to survive by teaching them how to cultivate the land. The celebration in 1621 lasted for three days and included games and food.

Thanksgiving Continues George Washington our first president proclaimed the first 'National Day of Thanksgiving' in 1789. Sarah Josepha Hale, a magazine editor, campaigned to make Thanksgiving a National Holiday in 1827 and succeeded. Abraham Lincoln our 16th president announced Thanksgiving to be national holiday in his proclamation on October 3, 1863.

Thanksgiving Traditions

Watch the Parade Thanksgiving Day Parades actually stems from an European tradition. In the 1920's many of Macy's department store employees were first-generation immigrants in America. Like all other immigrants, they too wanted to celebrate the American holiday with the type of festival they loved and cherished in Europe.

Eat Turkey and Pumpkin Pie

Don’t forget the extra slice of Pie at half time Watch Football After a wonderful dinner, we sit down to watch our favorite teams play. We should go out and take a walk instead!! Don’t forget the extra slice of Pie at half time

“What are your family traditions for Thanksgiving?”

Family Get Together The best part of this holiday is that our family gets together for a meal to give thanks for all that we have. I hope this is one tradition that never ends.
