NASA Educational Workshops (NEW) National Aeronautics and Space Administration

NASA Educational Workshops (NEW) An exciting and unique professional development opportunity for 7-12 educators who teach technology, science, mathematics, and/or geography, and Pre-K and elementary educators.

Goal To use the NASA mission, facilities, human resources, and programs to provide exposure and experiences to educators to support the enhancement of knowledge and skills, and to provide access to NASA information in technology, science, mathematics and geography.

NEW offers individual and team workshops: 1.Individual educators are competitively selected and assigned to a NASA Field Center and participate in a two week workshop; 2.Educator/Administrator teams are competitively selected and assigned to a NASA Field Center to participate in a one or two week specialized-focused workshop;

Program Description An invaluable professional development experience where educators have opportunities to see and learn real-world applications of technology, science, mathematics and geography from top NASA scientists, engineers, technicians and educational specialists.

Workshops are developed at the PreK-4, 5-8 and 9-12 grade levels. Over 4,500 educators have participated in this unique program since 1984.

The educational materials and activities presented in the workshops are related to the five NASA Strategic Enterprises.

National content standards in science, mathematics, technology, and geography are incorporated into the workshops, and educators are supported in their effort to align instructional approaches to reflect both national standards and state frameworks.

Educators have the opportunity to network with their colleagues and learn effective ways of integrating the information and experience acquired during their workshop into their classroom instruction.

Details:  Cost: Travel, housing and meal expenses are provided by NASA!  Credit: Graduate Credit or Professional Development Credits are available.  Where: The 10 NASA Field Centers

 Acceptance Notification: Selected participants will be notified by April 15 of their NASA Field Center assignment, location, and workshop dates.  When: Workshops take place during mid June, July and early August.

Have a minimum of three years teaching experience; Teach mathematics, science, geography or technology at the 7-12 grade level, OR teach at the Pre-K and/or elementary level.

Workshop Activities: Practice a “hands on - minds on” instructional approach integrating technology, science, mathematics, and geography. Acquire and use NASA curriculum materials.

Explore topics relating to Earth Science, Aerospace Technology, Human Exploration and Development of Space, Space Science and Biological and Physical Research. Work with colleagues to model teaching, learning, assessment and professional development strategies called for in the national literacy standards.

Work cooperatively in groups and discuss the use of new knowledge and skills. See NASA’s state-of- the-art research and development in action and talk to NASA scientists, engineers and technicians.

NEW is about Teamwork! NASA Field Centers Program Managers design, implement and evaluate workshops at each of the 10 Field Centers.

NSTA Educator Facilitators are master teachers and NEW program alumni who serve as strategic partners to the Field Center Program Manager

NEW Partnerships NEW is a collaborative endeavor of NASA with the National Science Teachers Association, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the International Technology Education Association, and the National Council for Geographic Education.
