MATTER Bakersfield City School District Summer School 2014 Second Grade

What is a Scientist? Scientist learn about the world around them by investigating and explaining.

What is a quadrant? Quadrant is one part of something that is evenly divided into four parts.

What is matter? Matter is everything around you, including you! Matter is what all things are made of.

Matter has 3 forms. 1. Solid 2. Liquid 3. Gas

Water is matter. Did you know it comes in all 3 forms? A Solid A Liquid A Gas ice water vaporwater

Vocabulary Day 2

Matter has certain properties. Matter can have color. Matter can be different sizes. Matter can have different shapes. Matter can have texture. Matter can be rigid or bendable. Matter also takes up space and has mass. Properties are the characteristics of matter, how something looks or feels.

Categorize: We can group objects by their properties. How can we categorize these objects?

1.We can sort them by color. One property is color. Red Green Yellow

Large objects Small objects 2. We can sort them by size. A second property is size.

Circles Squares Triangles 3. We can sort them by shape. A third property is shape.

4. We can sort them by texture? A fourth property is texture.

5. We can sort them by volume. A fifth property is volume.

Vocabulary Day 3

What is a hypothesis? Have you ever made a guess or a prediction? Have you ever predicted how a story was going to end? Have you ever predicted who was going to win the game? If you answered “Yes!” then you have made a hypothesis.

Hypothesis A hypothesis is basically a guess or prediction based on what you think might happen or what you think will be true. It can then be either proved or disproved by observation or collecting data.

Vocabulary Day 4

What is a solid? A solid has its own shape. A solid does not change unless you cut, crush, bend, or break it. Solids take up space and have mass.

Are all solids the same?

These solids are rigid. These solids are bendable.

Vocabulary Day 5

What does mix mean? A mix is when two or more different qualities or things are combined or put together.

What is a mixture? A mixture forms when two or more substances combine. –Keeps its physical properties –Can be separated by their physical properties –Do not form a new substance

Salad is an example of a mixture. Salad is an example of a mixture. The lettuce and vegetables do not change when mixed.

Vocabulary Day 6

Liquids Liquids do not have their own shape. Liquids take the shape of their container. Liquids take up space and have mass.

Liquids –pour –flow

Vocabulary Day 7

What is a container? A container is an object that can be used to hold or transport something.

What is a measuring cup? A measuring cup is marked in graded amounts and used for measuring ingredients. A measuring cup can be used to measure ingredients when you want to make sure there are equal parts. Equal means being the same in quantity, size, degree, or value.

Vocabulary Day 8

What does viscosity mean? Viscosity means how a fluid moves when it is flowing. A fluid with low viscosity is thicker so it flows slowly. Like honey: A fluid with high viscosity is thinner so it flows easily.

Vocabulary Day 9

What does energy mean? One type of energy is usable power that comes from heat. Heat (energy) comes from the sun. Will the flow of a liquid change if we add energy (heat) to it?

Vocabulary Day 11

What is a gas? Gases have no definite size or shape. Gases take the shape of their container. A common gas that’s all around us is air. A gas will fill all the space inside a container. Gases take up space and have mass.

Vocabulary Day 13

What is a chemical reaction? A chemical reaction is a process where a set of substances undergo a chemical change to form a different substance. Here’s an example: We have 2 substances: An egg and a heated pan = cooked egg

What is a seal? A seal is when you fasten, shut, close, or plug something securely and make it airtight.

Vocabulary Day 14

What is force? Force is energy or strength. Force has the ability to direct or pressure something to act in a certain way. When we blow air into into a balloon, we are forcing air into the balloon. The pressure of the air makes the balloon get bigger.

Vocabulary Day 15

What do freeze, melt, and temperature mean? Temperature is a degree of hotness or coldness the can be measured using a thermometer. Freeze is when something gets so cold that it no longer has any heat. Freezing turns a liquid into a solid such as water to ice. When heat changes something from a solid to a liquid it melts, such as ice to water. As a solid loses its coldness it begins to melt.

What are freeze, melt, and temperature? With water: When the temperature goes down it gets colder water freezes and turns to ice. When the temperature goes up it gets hotter and ice melts.
