Climate Change in Education Energia Klub Ada Ámon Budapest - August 26, th Annual Conference of the Association for Teacher Education in Europe

Motto The most informed age group is the young ones (18-25y). This is the generation which consumes and wastes loads of natural resources. This is a challenging paradox for YOU! Which way to go? Starting earlier? Going deeper?

Energia Klub is… …a value driven THINK&DO tank …roots in the environmental movement Fields of activities - climate change - energy efficiency - renewable energy sources - conventional energy sources - energy policy -

Our target groups General awareness raising: Households Municipalities Decision makers Specially for education: Schools (primary and secondary) Teachers Environmental educators

What to “teach” about Climate Change? Giving facts on climate change Explaining the causes and impacts/effects of climate change Explaining the environmental aspects of energy consumption (we focus on energy) Giving solutions on energy related issues (energy efficiency, renewable energy sources)

“To whom it may concern” Difficult to squeeze into the curriculum as an extra topic. School divides everything into subjects. Traditionally climate change is discussed in the framework of nature sciences (physics, biology, chemistry, geography). What about math, history, literature, languages, art?

Integrating into „new” subjects Math – calculation with climate data, electricity, gas consumption data, understanding and creating graphs English – climate change, renewable energy resources as a theme History – the history of CO2 and human activities, changes of energy sources used (Visual) art – creating pictures of wished future, visualizing problem and solutions Drama – simulation games on problems and solutions

Energia Klub’s educational tools Collection of exercises: “Where is energy?” booklet, lesson descriptions, experiments, games Background materials: Thematic posters: printed & online interactive posters Renewable Poster renewable poster renewable posterrenewable poster Energy Efficiency at Home energy efficiency energy efficiencyenergy efficiency Climate Change Climate Climate Overhead slides Project work: “Check it out!” handbook and teachers guide

Understanding, sensing, caring, acting… …for kindergarten, primary and secondary school Cooperative learning methods Person centred approach Facilitate and activate what the child can do Connection to the reality Developing other skills (problem solving, analysing, presentation, discussions, argumentation…)

Thank you for your attention!
