Bible Survey Deuteronomy Ancient Near Eastern Covenants Treaty Between Mursilis And Duppi-Tessub Preamble “These are the words of the Sun Mursilis, the great king, the king of the Hatti land, the valiant, the favorite of the Storm- god, the son of Suppiluliumas, the great king, the king of the Hatti land, the valiant.”

Bible Survey Deuteronomy Ancient Near Eastern Covenants Preamble Deuteronomy 1:1-5 These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel In the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the children of Israel, according to all that the LORD had commanded him to give to them, 4 after he had defeated Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth and Edrei. 5 Across the Jordan in the land of Moab, Moses undertook to expound this law.

Bible Survey Deuteronomy Ancient Near Eastern Covenants Historical Prologue Treaty Between Mursilis and Duppi-Tessub “Aziras was your grandfather, Duppi- Tessub. He rebelled against my father, but submitted again to my father. When the kings of Nuhassi land and the kings of Kinza rebelled against my father, Aziras did not rebel. As he was bound by treaty, he remained bound by treaty. As my father fought against his enemies, in the same manner fought Aziras. Aziras remained loyal….”

Bible Survey Deuteronomy Ancient Near Eastern Covenants Historical Prologue Deuteronomy 1:23-27 … I took twelve of your men, one man for each tribe. 24 "They turned and went up into the hill country, and came to the valley of Eshcol and spied it out. 25 "Then they took some of the fruit of the land in their hands and brought it down to us; and they brought us back a report and said, 'It is a good land which the LORD our God is about to give us.' 26 "Yet you were not willing to go up, but rebelled against the command of the LORD your God; 27 and you grumbled in your tents....

Bible Survey Deuteronomy Ancient Near Eastern Covenants Stipulations Treaty Between Mursilis and Duppi-Tessub “... honor the oath (of loyalty) to the king... and I, the king, will be loyal toward you, Duppi- Tessub.”

Bible Survey Deuteronomy Ancient Near Eastern Covenants Stipulations Deuteronomy 6:1-2 Now this is the commandment, the statutes and the judgments which the LORD your God has commanded me to teach you, that you might do them in the land where you are going over to possess it, 2 so that you and your son and your grandson might fear the LORD your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged.

Bible Survey Deuteronomy Ancient Near Eastern Covenants Ratification Treaty Between Mursilis and Duppi-Tessub “Should Duppi-Tessub not honor these words of the treaty and the oath, may these gods of the oath destroy Duppi-Tessub together with his person, his wife, his son, his grandson, his house, his land and together with everything that he owns. But if Duppi- Tessub honors these words of the treaty and the oath that are inscribed on this tablet, may these gods of the oath protect him together with his person, his wife, his son, his grandson, his house (and) his country.”

Bible Survey Deuteronomy Ancient Near Eastern Covenants Ratification Deuteronomy 28:1-2 Now it shall be, if you diligently obey the LORD your God, being careful to do all His commandments which I command you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. 2 All these blessings will come upon you and overtake you if you obey the LORD your God But it shall come about, if you do not obey the LORD your God, to observe to do all His commandments and His statutes with which I charge you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you.”

Bible Survey Deuteronomy Ancient Near Eastern Covenants Provisions for Perpetuity Treaty Between Mursilis and Duppi-Tessub “The words of the treaty and the oath are inscribed on this tablet”

Bible Survey Deuteronomy Ancient Near Eastern Covenants Provisions for Perpetuity Deuteronomy 31:9 9 So Moses wrote this law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and to all the elders of Israel.

Bible Survey Deuteronomy Ancient Near Eastern Covenants Provisions for Perpetuity Deuteronomy 27:2-4 2 So it shall be on the day when you cross the Jordan to the land which the LORD your God gives you, that you shall set up for yourself large stones and coat them with lime 3 and write on them all the words of this law, when you cross over, so that you may enter the land which the LORD your God gives you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as the LORD, the God of your fathers, promised you. 4 So it shall be when you cross the Jordan, you shall set up on Mount Ebal, these stones, as I am commanding you today....

Bible Survey Deuteronomy

Purpose of Writing To impress upon the Israelites the importance of keeping the covenant which they had made with the Lord. Just as nations were bound to keep their covenants with foreign kings or face the consequences, so Israel is bound to honor the terms of her covenant with the Greatest King, the Lord, or face the consequences.

Bible Survey Deuteronomy Christ in Deuteronomy Moses Deuteronomy 18:15, The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your countrymen, you shall listen to him 'I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. 19 'It shall come about that whoever will not listen to My words which he shall speak in My name, I Myself will require it of him.’

Bible Survey Deuteronomy Christ in Deuteronomy Moses and Christ had parallel personal histories (1.)Both had their lives threatened as children (2.)Both were rejected by their families (3.)Both led stubborn and faithless people

Bible Survey Deuteronomy Christ in Deuteronomy Moses and Christ held parallel offices (1.)Prophet (2.)Priest (3.)King

Bible Survey Deuteronomy Christ in Deuteronomy Israel

Bible Survey Deuteronomy Christ in Deuteronomy Parallels between Israel and Christ (1.)Both are the result of miraculous conceptions (2.)Both had their survival threatened early on (3.)Both sojourned in Egypt (4.)Both were baptized in the Jordan River (5.)Both wandered in the wilderness (6.)Both suffered a death and resurrection

Bible Survey Deuteronomy Christ in Deuteronomy Areas in which Christ fulfilled the Covenant (1.)During his wilderness sojourn, rather than grumbling, he was content to live on the Word of God. (2.)Rather than resisting his death on the cross, he willingly submitted to it as God’s will.

Bible Survey Deuteronomy Christ’s Use of Deuteronomy Interestingly, Jesus quotes from Deuteronomy frequently throughout his ministry. During what must have been one of the most trying times in his life, his temptation in the wilderness, he quoted Deuteronomy from memory.

Bible Survey Deuteronomy Place in the Canon In a sense, Deuteronomy is a summarization of the Bible so far. It describes just what has been going on between God and the world. The essence of that interaction is the covenant with Israel. God has rescued Israel and Israel must respond with faith and love and obedience. Ultimately, she does not succeed in this demand and is judged accordingly. By contrast, Jesus Christ does succeed in fulfilling this demand of the covenant, but is still judged as a substitute for all those who do not succeed, including you and me.
