Best Value Training East Renfrewshire Council

Best Value Training Our plan u Basically sound but new a learning curve u Listen and talk to the staff u Get a feel for learning preferences u Understand insecurities and lack of confidence u Aim for an achievable standard for all staff u Prioritise the support of their training

Best Value Training Making it happen!- our hopes u Sold it to the staff telling them how much more marketable they would be ! u Set up a forum so they can talk about and share their training experiences and problems u Hoped to demonstrate quality in materials administration and support u Brought in external speakers for briefings so they understood the big picture

Best Value Training The plan u ECDL accreditation as standard u 14 passes 7 well on the way u 30 November u 3 learning centres u 1st People’s Network Library opened

Best Value Training Where we wanted to be? u Ready for People’s Network roll out in…. u Right staff ready at the right time. u A training provider who understand how crucial all of this was to us

Best Value Training Looking back Our approach was good - all of the feedback and evaluation of the training and delivery was listened to carefully. u “ECDL ok time- consuming ” u “ Advanced and contextual training a waste of a day in their lives” u “Practice/ study time difficult to arrange” u “Materials, co-ordination of receipt of module materials and content poor” …more. We had to listen and act

Best Value Training Training support officer- problems u Very poor communication with provider no reply to calls or u Still no reply even when escalated by Head of Service u Materials arriving after seminars u Poor content u No assessment of our staff’s level of knowledge u General impression of inefficiency and anything will do

Best Value Training ……and u Training was aimed too wide at all authorities staff u It took no account of our already very high level of skills and knowledge u One size fits all approach- no consultation on content u Poor value for NOF money and our staff’s valuable time u It was demotivating the staff

Best Value Training Tackling the problems u Evaluated carefully not a decision taken lightly u Listed our problems u tried to communicate them to the supplier u No response u Not a decision taken easily but need to ensure quality training and materials u Discussed our problem with Rhona u Rhona discussed with NOF u New methodology discussed with NOF, planned and costed

Best Value Training Next steps u Looked at other providers u Took up references from other authorities u Met and interviewed providers u Roadtested new ECDL u costs agreed with new supplier

Best Value Training Time for action u Satisfied with alternatives in cost, communication and content u Wrote to provider saying that we did not wish to take up any of the further advanced and contextual training and requested a final invoice

Best Value Training Rethink our approach and delivery u Move to a more “seminar style” of training u More regular meetings with supplier u More input into content of advanced and contextual roles u Co-ordinated approach? u Continue to monitor and evaluate content u Staff incentives?

Best Value Training Changes we have made u New supplier u Hugely improved communication u Better understanding of our staff’s level of expertise u Located closeby u An ECDL package that is individual/ sensitive and can be completed in half the time u Input into the advanced and contextual content

Best Value Training If we can share our experiences? u Call us u Visit us u Meet our TSO u Meet staff currently being trained and get their feedback

Best Value Training Thank you for listening
