Primary Leadership 1 A resource for school CPD leaders

This presentation is for school CPD leaders. It’s a resource for structuring a 45-minute CPD session on leadership. It contains six clips from programmes shot in primary schools, and each clip is 3-4 minutes long. To accompany the clips there are short programme summaries and discussion starters. Clips do not need to be watched in any particular order, and the presentation can be adapted to suit the priorities of individual schools. The discussion starters are included as suggestions only. Click on the weblinks to view the full programmes and additional resources. (All programmes covered by the Creative Archive Licence can be viewed on the Teachers TV website and downloaded by registered users of the site.)

Overview These six clips, with their accompanying discussion starters, cover the following aspects of leadership in primary schools: Involving parents in urban schools (clip 1) Distributive leadership (clip 2) How to save money on local authority contracts (clip 3) Teaching about cultural diversity in small rural schools (clip 4) Black and ethnic minority leadership (clip 5) The Children’s Plan and multi-agency coordination (clip 6)

1 Urban Leadership The World of Difference Jenny Comish, headteacher at a school in a deprived area of Liverpool, discusses how parents are managed and valued. The school rewards attendance and encourages parents to provide regular feedback.

The attendance awards seem to motivate the children to come to school. Are there ways to target parents directly about the importance of attendance? How can parents be encouraged to pick children up on time at the end of the day? Are surveys a good way to find out what parents think about school? What else can be done to capture parents’ opinions?

2 Leadership in Challenging Circumstances St. Aidan’s Primary At a school serving one of Britain’s most deprived areas, distributive leadership is used to retain good teaching staff.

One teacher completed the NPQH in her late twenties. Is it an appropriate qualification for teachers who are at such an early stage of their career? Another young teacher has been relieved of her class teaching duties for several hours each day to implement the school’s action plan for ICT. What are the advantages of this approach? Are there any drawbacks? Would the distributive leadership model encourage you to remain in your school and take on additional responsibility?

3 Save Money Local Authority Contracts Procurement expert Claire Dicks looks into the local authority contracts used by a primary school in east London. Can she help business manager Zena Smart and headteacher Angela Tapscott to save some money?

What advice is available to schools on how to review and improve their contracts? Have you inherited any contracts that you would like to review? Do local authority contracts usually offer value for money?

4 Leadership in Small Primary Schools Curriculum The challenge of teaching cultural and diversity education at a small school with a predominantly white community of pupils.

The school uses familiar traditions to introduce other cultures. Is this a good way to help children to understand cultural differences? The after-school Chinese club seems to be an effective way to support and value one pupil’s dual heritage. What other after-school activities might work well? What are the best ways for small rural schools to keep pupils connected to the wider world?

5 Black and Ethnic Minority Leadership Trial by Headship Marva Rollins was the first black headteacher in Enfield, London. For the past ten years she has sought to increase the number of black headteachers in London primary schools. She coaches deputy heads and assistant headteachers who are going for their first headship.

Are there enough BME leaders in the schools in your local authority? Can governor training make a difference? Do you agree that it is strategic for senior managers looking for a headship to aim for a one-form entry school? The feedback Patricia received at a recent interview seems to relate to the manner in which she expressed herself rather than the substance of what she said. Is success at interview often a case of style over substance? “It goes back to that perception of what a senior manager looks like.” What does a senior manager look like?

6 Every Child Matters Tom’s Team Tom is a Year 5 pupil with Asperger’s who attends a mainstream school. Occupational therapist Lesley Platts describes how an integrated approach to children’s services can enable school staff and agency professionals to support Tom.

How might an integrated working programme help teachers to include children like Tom in lessons? Does an integrated approach reduce schools’ workload or add to it? Tom will soon make the transition to secondary school. Could multi-agency working make the transition smoother?
