RHINO MONTH The Johannesburg Zoo celebrates Rhino month. This month long program aims to raise awareness of the plight of this magnificent animal and the battle the species face in light of the increasing threat of poaching. Did you know the Rhinoceros dates back to the Miocene era, over 5 million of years ago? Since 1970, the rhino population has declined by 90%. Rhinos have no true natural predators in the wild. The dramatic decline of rhinos is due to poaching. Rhino Activities Rhino Talks A march against the poaching of Rhinos Rhino Enrichment A “Save the Rhino” wall. Visitors will be able to write about what the Rhino means to them. November

Zoo Trot The zoo trot is a great way to keep active. The trot consists of a 5km or 10 km fun run or walk. The route takes you past some of the most popular enclosures which include: lions, elephants, rhinos and giraffes. It is a great way to reduce stress, build stamina, keep fit and socialize. For every 3 consecutives trots you complete, you receive a medal with one of our zoo animals on them. The challenge is to collect them all. The trot will takes place on: Date:13 November 2011 Time:7:00 for 7:30 Entry fee:Adults: R35.00 Family Day Family Days are ideal for corporate team building, family get tog ethers and group activity. Enjoy a fun filled day where young and old can participate in unique activities in the zoo’s tranquil setting. PLAY The Johannesburg Zoo animals thoroughly enjoyed the recent behaviour enrichment program, where they played with balls. The chimpanzees’ were by far the most energetic, while the black and white ruffed lemurs displayed the most agility. Our gentle spectacled beats were the most patient, they took their time rolling the ball and trying to get the treats from inside them. Be sure not to miss the next sessions. TOURS The zoo offers a number of different tour options. Skilled tour guides take you through the zoo and offer insightful information about our zoo animals. The many tours on offer will suit any age group and give you an up close view of our animals. FEEDING TIMES Learn more about our zoo animals and enjoy their feeding time. Zoo animals are fed at specific times during the day. Each species is given a particular diet with a certain amount of food based on their age and weight.
