These are the key areas that the European Commission wants researchers to explore over coming years Societal Challenges are: health, demographic change and wellbeing food security, sustainable agriculture, marine and maritime research and the bio-economy secure, clean and efficient energy smart, green and integrated transport climate action, resource efficiency and raw materials Europe in a changing world – inclusive, innovative and refelctive societies secure societies Here the Commission will fund ‘top-down’ research or applied (i.e. not ‘pure’ research) – addressing specific themes, questions, topics Work Programmes are published to outline Calls that cover individual topics on biannual basis. Each WP - ÷ed into Calls these ÷ed into Topics Funding consortia based project teams (min 3 member states) on different research and innovation actions; innovation actions (where activities and plans will produce products/services that can be brought to the marketplace); and coorindation and support actions (ways of enhancing networks between researchers; communicating research results; developing dissemination practices; supporting dialogue between researchers and policy makers) New and Key to H2020 (compared with FP7) the importance of developing holistic and trans-disciplinary approaches to these challenges and questions. So HSS researchers should consider teaming up with experts and academics from across partner institutions when designing applications across all the areas defined under these societal challenges.
