IT CONCEPTS  Information systems (IS) are network of computer used to store / process and transmit information 3  Information technology (IT) is the area of technology including computer software, information systems, computer hardware, programming languages.

IS COMPONENTS  Human  Procedures  Hardware  Software  Data  Connections (e.g. network) 4

HUMAN  To use / develop information systems  Users and developers  For examples:  Person sell / buy using Internet  Administrators work database to store and retrieve information  Students use of online learning systems 5

SOFTWARE  A set of instructions for the computer to complete a computer task  e.g. staff makes a document to boss, or designs graphic  A software = a program  Software includes:  System software  Application software 6

SYSTEM SOFTWARE  Is a collection of "background" programs:  Not used directly by users  Allow users and application software interact with hardware  Allocate computer resources to applications  Often run automatically at startup of a computer  For example:  Operating system (OS)  Device drivers 7

APPLICATION SOFTWARE  Programs that help end users to perform one or more specific tasks  There are two types: Basic software applications: word processing, spreadsheet, database,... For example, MS Word, Excel, Access  Specialized software applications: graphics, audio, sound, web design,... For example: Photoshop, Media player, Dreamweaver, Visual Studio 8

PROCEDURE  A set of guidelines and rules that people must follow when using the information system  Usually like documents (comes with hardware and software, respectively) 9

HARDWARE  All the physical components of the computer such as mouse, keyboard, monitor, CPU,... etc.  Is divided into three types:  Device I / O  Secondary memory  Connection device 10
