Excavations on the site of Rome reveal hut villages/human occupation from c1000BC on Model of Palatine hut village based on foundations found from c BC mages1.htm Model of Palatine hut showing construction techniques ages02/daytwocaptions.html

Pottery and hut-urns from 10 th century settlement on Palatine es/lat311moore/LAT311imag es1.htm

Skeleton of woman dating to approx. 1000BC, found in mid 2006 – buried with bronze and amber jewellery

Evidence can be found of substantial palace on Palatine Hill mid 8 th century BC

The trad. date for founding of Rome by Romulus = 753BC, however it appears Rome was not truly a city until late 7 th cent. BC. The Cloaca Maxima (the Great Sewer) was built at this time – is still in use today!!!

At first separate villages on hills (esp. Palatine, Quirinal) then join together c. 625BC

Archaeological evidence suggests clearing of old huts, foundation of city late 7 th /early 6 th cent BC – a pebbled forum and carefully laid out sewers have been discovered

Etruscan style tombs, Etruscan bucchero pottery and Greek vases are also found in Rome at this time suggesting trade with the north – or Etruscan domination of Rome?

Writing appears c600BC – Archaic Latin but written in Etruscan alphabet, developed from the Greeks
