EARTHQUAKES AND PLATE TECTONICS
 stress -a force that acts on rock to change its shape or volume. 3 Types of Stress  tension -pulls on crust, stretching rock so it becomes thinner.
Part 3 Seismometers and Seismograms A seismogram is the record produced by a seismometer (or seismograph).
Chapter 8 Earthquakes. I. What are Earthquakes? Seismology is the science devoted to studying earthquakes Most take place near the edges of tectonic plates.
Earthquake Properties
People and Earthquakes (47) Scientists who study earthquakes and seismic waves are seismologists The height of the lines traced on the paper of a seismograph.
 Seismologists use two scales when classifying earthquakes. 2) Modified Mercalli Scale 1) Richter Scale.
Earthquakes HOW IS IT MEASURED?.  Instrument located at or near the earth’s surface to record seismic waves. (Tool) SEISMOGRAPH.
Earthquake Scales Richter vs. Mercalli. What is an earthquake? Earthquakes are the vibration of the earth as a result of a release of energy – Earthquakes.
How do scientists know the structure of the Earth? Rock samples (direct evidence) Seismic waves (indirect evidence) –Vibrations that travel through Earth.

Measuring Earthquakes (5-2 Notes). Magnitude = a measure of an earthquake’s strength Based on seismic waves.
Measuring Earthquakes. Seismograph Is an instrument used to detect and record seismic waves.
1. What do seismologists use to determine when an earthquake started? A seismogram 2. How is the intensity of an earthquake determined? By the amount.
Earthquakes Aim: What causes earthquakes?. Stress Stress (stored energy) is created in the crust as the plates move around. Faults are breaks in the rock.

Measuring Earthquakes Cornell Notes page 127

What is seismology? The study of earthquakes An entire branch of science is devoted to understanding earthquakes

What do we use to measure earthquakes? Seismograph an instrument that measures vibrations in the ground, and records the location and strength of an earthquake

An alternative seismic instrument…

What is the Richter Scale? Measures the magnitude or strength of the shock waves. Is measured in steps from one upward. Each successive unit is ten times more powerful than the one before. A 7.0 on the Richter scale is 1000 times more powerful than an earthquake measuring 4.0.

What is the Mercalli Intensity Scale? Measures what is felt by people and the amount of damage caused Uses roman numerals Scale: I- not felt to XII- total destruction

Scale II Felt indoors by few

Scale IV Felt indoors by many, outdoors by few

Scale VI Felt by all, indoors and outdoors. Moved furniture

Scale VIII Fright general - alarm approaches panic.

Scale XII Damage total - practically all buildings damaged greatly http://www.abag.ca.gov/bayarea/eqmaps/doc/mmi.html
