Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures

Pure Substances Elements Atoms Molecules Compounds A sample of matter that has definite chemical and physical properties. Elements Atoms Molecules Compounds

H2 C Cl Na O2 What is an ELEMENT? A pure substance containing only one kind of atom. Cannot be separated into simpler materials by chemical or physical means. Over 100 existing elements are listed and classified on the Periodic Table Cl Na O2

What is a COMPOUND? H2O NaCl CO2 A pure substance containing two or more kinds of different elements The atoms are chemically combined in some way H2O Compounds cannot be separated by physical means, separating a compound requires a chemical reaction Properties of a compound are usually different than the properties of the elements it contains NaCl CO2

What is a MIXTURE? Two or more elements or compounds NOT chemically combined Can be uniform called homogeneous and are known as solutions Can also be non-uniform called heterogeneous Can be separated into their components by chemical or physical means

Can you identify the following? You will be shown a series of photos. Tell if each photo represents an item composed of an element, compound, or mixture. Review: An element contains just one type of atom. A compound contains two or more different atoms joined together. A mixture contains two or more different substances that are only physically joined together, not chemically. A mixture can contain both elements and compounds
