Lab 27. The Endocrine System

For Your Safety Read the two sheets (green and pink) Sign the yellow sheet Under 18? Please see me. Sign out the microscope you will use this quarter.

Lab safety First aid kit at the front Fire extinguisher at the back Eye wash at sink Showers in the back Anyone else “First Aid” certified?

Lab Safety No eating or drinking in lab Clean up rule: It is your responsibility to clean up after yourself and put everything back clean and where it belongs.

Lab clean up Put models back, as you found them Put microscopes back Put slides back in the proper box and correctly inserted. (Another class comes in right after you – those students should not have to search for misplaced items!)

Lab clean up Dispose of other items as follows: Paper towels go in the trash Broken glass and slide cover slips go in “broken glass” container Biological waste goes in red bucket: Empty slides get rinsed, dried, and returned to box Dissection tools: clean or put in wash Wipe down your bench area when done

MICROSCOPE SIGN UP Sign in on the sheet next to you microscope number – Use this same microscope for the quarter

Endocrine Organs

Pituitary Gland

Pituitary A B C

Pituitary Control

Thyroid Gland Follicles: follicular cells surrounding lumen filled with thyroglobulin T3, T4 C Cells (parafollicular cells): Calcitonin

Thyroid

Parathyroid Gland Chief cells: Oxyphil cells

Adrenal Glands

Adrenal Glands Cortex Medulla: epinepherine and norepinepherine Zona glomerulosa: mineralcorticoids Zona fasciculata: glucocorticoids Zona reticularis: sex steroids Medulla: epinepherine and norepinepherine

Pancreas

Pancreas Endocrine pancreas: Exocrine pancreas: Islets of Langerhans Alpha cells: glucagon Beta cells: insulin Exocrine pancreas: Acinar cells: digestive juices, buffers

Male Gonad: Testis Interstitial Cells: Secrete testosterone

Female Gonad: Ovary Follicular cells: secrete estrogens As corpus luteum, secrete estrogen and progesterone

Today’s Lab Examine slides: Complete review sheet Thyroid gland Parathyroid gland Pancreas Pituitary Adrenal gland Draw and label each tissue on paper provided Complete review sheet Due next week in lab (Monday)
