What is resilience? What it’s not Nature or nurture? Can resilience be developed? Can it be taught? The Advantage Licensed Trainer

REDUNDANCY

WHAT IS RESILIENCE? Responding well to pressure Being goal-oriented Keeping a sense of proportion An “adaptive survival mechanism” Acceptance of setbacks and challenges Strong link with positive psychology and optimism Adversity two ways

What resilience isn’t Not a fixed character trait – it’s an ability and a capacity Not about strength Not about “willpower”

Nature or nurture?

1)Personality/individual characteristics 1)Environment 1)Person and environment

Resilience – 3 ways Person and environment Personality/individu al characteristics Environment You develop and improve your resilience skills

The role of adversity… Can build resilience but the extent of this still depends on the personality/environment equation A recent study on resilience and economic recession showed that capacity to be resilient increased MOST during the toughest of times

Why is one person able to bounce back more easily than another? Let’s take two different people who have each lost their jobs…..

CAN WE DEVELOP RESILIENCE?

Perseverance and ability to focus Belief in fixed mind-set Risk-aversion

KNOW HOW TO DEAL WITH… C = criticism R – rejection A - **holes P = pressure
