ISLAMIC JIHAD Mr. A

THE KORAN Read the article on “Jihad” and underline important info While you read, ask yourself; “is the Muslim idea of Jihad today justified” When you are done reading come get the handout.

REVIEW ► JIHAD - Does NOT mean “holy war” (Crusades)  “Struggle to defend the faith.” Islam requires Muslims to strive for peace NO attacking civilians… …uphold justice …respect religious freedom …accept peace CRUSADES (Mainz, Jerusalem) (Forced conversion) CHARLEMAGNE (Forcible conversion) HERESIES / FRIDAY 13th (Torture & Death) Qur’an preaches AGAINST war

DEFIANCE ? ► Do you think Muslim terrorists defy the teachings of Islam? Examples? Examples? Why? Are Muslim terrorists justified in their actions?? “I want to vaporize the Jews”

Daniel Pearl ► Worked for Wall St Journal  Captured in Pakistan  Tortured  Beheaded on TV ARE THE ACTIONS OF TERRORISTS JUSTIFIED? Despite the Qur’an’s instruction for peace, extremists believe in a Jihad as a “Holy War”

DOES THE KORAN JUSTIFY JIHAD /11/2001

Hezbollah claims “Death to America” Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, in a speech before 150,000 supporters in a Beirut suburb said the U.S. will be made to suffer greatly as a result of its presence in Iraq, according to a report in the L.A. Times: "In the past, when the Marines were in Beirut, we screamed, Death to America! Today, when the region is being filled with hundreds of thousands of American soldiers, Death to America was, is and will stay our slogan. Even before the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq began”, Nasrallah raged, "The people of the region will receive [America] with rifles, blood, arms, martyrdom and martyrdom operations.” Hezbollah, the so-called "attack dog" of its sponsors Iran and Syria, with active terrorist cells on four continents, has made good on its threats before: In 1983, the group blew up the U.S. Embassy and the Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, killing hundreds. The Marines were there to help cover Israel’s withdrawal from the capital. - April 18, NewsMax.com

VIDEO Why do Muslim extremists hate Jews, Christians and the West (Britain and America)???? * “PROMISSED LAND” - FOR WHO?????

REVIEW VIDEO ► WHY MUSLIMS HATE JEWS, WHO OWNS THAT LAND? ► Palestinian refugees ► NO PEACE ► Arab states won’t recognize Israel as an independent state ► OLYMPICS ► Yassar Arafat PLO ► Presidnt Carter  Israel agrees to give up land Temporary peace ► Lebanon - Arafat killing Jews ► Jews and Christians kill Palestinian refugee  Palestinians refugee ► Settlements  Intifada  Land for Peace Deal - USA “No more terrorism” HAMAS,SADAM OSLO - PLO & ISRAEL -Israel withdraws from Gaza & West Bank Jewish PM who want peace Netenyawho back as PM

Why do we support the Jews? ► Expulsions & Pogroms ► Dreyfus Affair ► Zionism  WW1 - League of Nations ► Holocaust WW2 ► Independent Jewish State  Similar values (Democracy) ► We sell weapons to them ► We both fight Islamic terrorism

TIMELINE OF BUILDING HATRED Crusades Britain takes over territory in the Middle East after WW1 (Including Palestine as a result of the Treaty of Versailles) - Increased Zionism Republic of Turkey replaces Ottoman Caliphate The U.N. and Britain divide Palestine into a Jewish and Arab state after WW2 - Zionism - Jews from all over migrate to Israel Israel declared independent Jewish state. (U.S.A. acknowledges Israel) - Millions of Palestinians become refugees 1960’s & 70’s - Constant Jewish & Arab wars (U.S. support of Israel) 1980’s - Lebanon and Beirut (Massacres and Barracks bombing) st Gulf War (Occupation of Mecca = Usama Bin Ladin) 1990’s - Economic sanctions 2000’s - Iraq War, Afghanistan War & Democracy; Jewish settlements in Eastern Jerusalem (West Bank); Still NO Palestinian state

Think like a Middle Eastern Muslim for a minute….. ► Are they justified in hating Jews and the USA?????? Consider what you read in the “Jihad Article”

From the Jihad article ► “To those against whom war is made, permission is given (to fight), because they are wronged; (They are) those who have been expelled from their homes in defiance of right,- (for no cause) except that they say, "our Lord is Allah". Zionism, gb, ww2, israel

From the Jihad article ► “And why should ye not fight in the cause of God and of those who, being weak, are ill-treated (and oppressed)? - Men, women and children, whose cry is: "Our Lord! Rescue us from this town, whose people are oppressors; and raise for us from thee one who will protect; and raise for us from thee one who will help! Palestinians

How has the Idea of Jihad been violated in a terrorists mind? Individual Level Submission to God (not to a government, especially a foreign government) Economic Spend on the poor, not the development of buildings and banks in an effort to accumulate wealth for yourself Economic sanctions, Support of Israel (resulting in Palestinians in refugee camps) Jihad -“Defend the faith” Democracy means separation of church and state Tyranny - Exploitation - Oppression - PHYSICAL The idea of using armed self-defense as a means of retribution against tyranny, exploitation, and oppression in order to defend the freedom of faith… Turkey, Israel, Afghanistan and Iraq in the 80’s, Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan, (Overall occupation in Middle East) Crusades, Occupation of Mecca & Medina in 1st Gulf War, restrictions on Iran’s nuclear programs, implementation of Democracy (ending theocracy)

WHY WOULD A TERRORIST DIE FOR “JIHAD”? ► For Muslim extremists, to die as a martyr in the “Jihad” against the “infidels”, guarantees you a seat at the right hand of Allah. ► 'Whoever amongst us is killed as a martyr shall go to Paradise to lead such a luxurious life as he has never seen” ► “They shall eat the fruits of Paradise from wherever they like and then nestle in these chandeliers” ► It is also suggests that martyr’s will be surrounded by “companions” and grapevines  The idea of 72 virgins is not clear

Usama’s response to targeting civilians "We believe that the worst thieves in the world today and the worst terrorists are the Americans. Nothing could stop you except perhaps retaliation in kind. We do not have to differentiate between military or civilian. As far as we are concerned, they are all targets." *Asked whether he approved of terrorism and attacks on civilians, he replied:

“The presence of U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia, the home of Islam's holiest sites, the suffering of the Iraqi people as a result of sanctions imposed after the Gulf War, and U.S. support of Israel.” -Usama Bin Ladin, 1998 fatwa “Jihad against Jews and Crusaders” “The duty of Muslims is to carry out holy war against the enemies of Islam and to expel the Americans from the Gulf region.” "we do not differentiate between those dressed in military uniforms and civilians; they are all targets in this fatwa." “Cut off the head of the snake” “Declaration of war against USA… …because the USA declared War against God” 9/11 Commission

What does Usama Bin Ladin want? ► The U.S.A. out of the Middle East ► An independent Palestinian state and for us to stop helping Israel ► For Americans to convert to the Islamic faith Intellectual Jihad - Usama wants to spread Islam to all humankind

QUESTION?????? IS IT REASONABLE TO CONSIDER THAT THE TERM JIHAD MAY NOT HAVE BEEN MISINTERPRETED BASED ON EXTREMIST’S VIEWS AND USAMA’S STATEMENTS?? Who thinks that the Islamic fundamentalists idea of a “Jihad” (Holy War / terrorism) is justified? Please write YES or NO on a piece of paper (with your name on it) and pass it forward

PORTFOLIO ► You need to now write a well-developed essay (At least 6 paragraphs long) justifying THE OPPOSITE position of your vote. ► Do your own outside research ► You will be allowed to use the following while writing your essay;  Independent Research  The Qur’an  The Jihad Article
