P ‘Sarah, wake up!’ – ‘Let me speak with him’ Sarah Good and Tituba await hanging – deluded, slightly crazy Rebellion breaking out – risk of riots, which HALE is blamed for inciting Parris is terrified of damaging his reputation – his community is out of order, he is out of control Danforth is EVIL – he refuses to accept responsibility as this would make him look bad. He believes he is the voice of God. Hale admits to his wrong-doings. Asking people to lie breaks his strict Christian beliefs, which would condemn you to hell. But at this stage, he believes life is more important.

ACT FOUR SEGMENT 2

P ‘Pray leave them’ – ‘God forbid I take it from him’ Proctor arrives – he has been tortured. They are left alone. Elizabeth tells him about Giles’ bravery John considers confession – he feels he is not good enough to die like a saint He asks Elizabeth for forgiveness – she asks him for forgiveness. Their relationships is reforged. He reveals he will plead for his life. When it comes to signing the confession, he realises he cannot surrender his name, and betray his friends. He has chosen his fate now – he is lead away to be hanged. Elizabeth stands resolute – she will not stop him. Although she would rather him living, she understands that his choice is noble, and demonstrates the very man he was.

THEMES CONSCIENCE Rebecca; She is shocked that John seems to be confessing, she knows it is wrong to accuse others falsely ‘(astonished) Why John!’ John; He will not forsake others for himself – ‘I speak my own sins, I cannot judge another’ John; ‘They go like saints. I like not to spoil their names.’ HONOUR John; He thinks of his friends, he will always protect them - ‘Beguile me not – I blacken all of them when this is nailed to the church the very day they hang for silence!’ John; Wants to protect his children, teach them right from wrong – ‘I have three children – how may I teach them to walk like men in the world…’ John; He wills Elizabeth to stay strong as this is for the goodness of all - ‘Give them no tear, tears pleasure them! Show honour now, show a stony heart and sink them with it!’ REPUTATION John; he refuses to sign his name against lies – ‘Because it is my name!...I have given you my soul; leave me my name!’ Parris; ‘It is a weighty name, it will strike the village that Proctor confess.’
