What Are Human Rights?? Think of a baby that hasn’t asked to come into the world.. What are the basic rights you think any child should expect? See how many basic Human Rights you think everyone should expect to have and then click the mouse and see if the writer of this presentation agrees with you. Rights are things that protect us from harm.

To be allowed to live (the right to life) To be protected from harm To be protected from disease To have food and drink Basic minimum things such as these that we should all expect to have, wherever we live, have become known as Human Rights. You will see on the next slides how some of these have been written into the laws of many countries in the world.

The United Nations Universal Declaration Of Human Rights Equality in rights. All people should have the same rights. 1. Equality in rights. All people should have the same rights. 2. The right to life. All people should be allowed to live. 2. The right to life. All people should be allowed to live. 3. Freedom from Slavery. No person should be forced to work without fair pay and conditions. 3. Freedom from Slavery. No person should be forced to work without fair pay and conditions. The right not to be tortured The right to a private family life. The right to choose your own religion The right to education The right not to be discriminated against Almost every country in the world has now signed the above agreement saying they agree with five basic human rights. 4. People should be able to defend themselves if they are accused of something wrong. 5. Freedom of expression. People should be able to say what they want as long as it does not go against the law or another human right. 5. Freedom of expression. People should be able to say what they want as long as it does not go against the law or another human right. In 1998 Britain signed the UK Human Rights Act which is linked to the European Convention On Human Rights which added more rights like the following.

Human Rights In Conflict Are Some Rights More Important Than Others? A white football fan shouts out a racist remark against a black football fan in the crowd. Racial discrimination is against the Human rights Act but he says that he is exercising his human right to “freedom of expression”, Sometimes Human Rights conflict. Which one is the more important in this case in your opinion? One Human Right can not be exercised if it denies another. In this case, racism is not allowed so you can not express racist views and claim that it is all right just because you’re expressing an opinion.

Human Rights In Conflict Here is another example These Siamese twins are joined at the shoulder. They will both die soon if they are not separated. But if they ARE separated then one of them will certainly die. Which Human Rights are in conflict here? Can you think of two or three more examples of how two or more Human Rights might come into conflict like this?
