Face and body treatments Galvanism Face and body treatments

What is Galvanism? It’s purpose is to introduce chemicals into the skin during iontophoresis. For skin cleansing during desincrustation. It is used on the body to treat areas of hard fat. This is all achieved through the use of an electrical current which creates a circuit.

Direct Current Galvanic current Constant flow of electrons in one direction. Must have two electrodes for the current to flow Anode – attached to the positive lead Cathode – attached to the negative lead

How does it work? Whilst the current flows Chemical changes occur at the electrodes; Acids are produced at the anode. These chemicals have an astringent toning effect

How does it work? Alkalis are produced at the cathode, these chemicals have a cleansing, softening action on the skin

Task In small groups or pairs; Make two lists under the headings Anode and Cathode, of the skin types and conditions that would benefit from the use of that electrode.

Galvanic Facial Treatments Iontophoresis; to introduce water soluble ingredients into the skin. Desincrustation; to cleanse the skin of excess sebum, dirt and dead skin cells.

Galvanic Body Uses Iontophoresis to push water soluble products into the skin, to work on cellulite and increases blood circulation to areas where it is poor.

Contra-indications Make a list of all the contra-indications you can think of that may effect this treatment.

Contra-indications Cuts Electronic implants Bruising Skin diseases/disorders Scars Cancer Swelling Operations Hepatitis Circulatory disorder High/Low blood pressure Loss of sensation Metal pins or plates Heart disease Electronic implants Dysfunction of the nervous system Epilepsy Botox Retina A/Retinoid Oxytetracyclin HIV Thrombosis/embolism Piercings Nervous client Medication Pregnancy
