AUTOMATED TAXI ADVISORY SYSTEM CPE481 FINAL PRESENTATION BEN CARRERO OLUWATONI FUWAPE CHRIS LANHAM DAVID WATKINS JACOB WOLEN

OVERVIEW Problem Statement & Project Validity Solution Approaches Project Goals, Design, & Results Suggested Future Progress

PROBLEM STATEMENT Production of an overlay system that will increase safety by providing pilots with a visible and persistent path indication during their taxi. Overlay: Non-vital, fail-safe Visible: Utilizes existing taxiway centerline lights Persistent: Signal remains visible to pilot throughout taxi procedure

PROJECT VALIDITY Seeks to prevent historically tragic runway incursions 1977 – Tenerife 1991 – Los Angeles 1996 – Quincy, IL Seeks to reduce expensive repairs due to error 2011 – JFK International AirportJFK International Airport

SOLUTION APPROACHES Airport Movement Area Safety System (AMASS) Airport Surface Detection Equipment, Model X (ASDE-X) Runway Status Lights (RWSL) Automated Taxiway Advisory System (ATAS)

PROJECT GOALS Proof-of-Concept Model Accurately portrays operations of an arbitrary small-scale airport Physical model produces tangible demonstration use cases that are easy to understand Increases visibility of hardware-software interfacing role Draws on electronics expertise of team Requirements Provide visual cue as per problem statement Schedule aircraft routes efficiently Attempt to prevent collisions due to pilot route deviation

PROJECT DESIGN: HARDWARE Model of Airport Plywood Sheet: 3’x6’ Painted markings distinguishing taxiway and runway sections Lego terminal Lighting Edge Lights and dedicated power supply Centerline Lights Presence Detection Parallax RFID Reader Interfacing Tools Arduino Mega and Arduino Uno

PROJECT DESIGN: SOFTWARE Scheduling Algorithms: Shortest Path between sections Allows for un-inherent incursion (expected) This will allow for us to show incursion on taxiways. Mapping of the airport GUI LED Lighting Schema

GUI DEMO

PROJECT RESULTS Model constructed Hardware Interfacing – 70% Wiring complete, LED sequencing complete Presence detection working; not integrated Software Integration – 70% GUI nearing completion Schedule / LED sequence interface pending PICTURES!!!

SUGGESTED FUTURE PROGRESS Second Stage: Miniature Small Scale Airport: many small moving parts Add a more complex taxi system Get multiple RFID Readers for taxiways
