Development of language adaptation required of teaching

Class room adaptation for hearing impaired If you have a student with a hearing impairment, here are some simple adaptations you can make in your teaching to help this student succeed Provide all lesson directions in writing. Provide him/her with material (whatever you will be discussing with the class) in writing.

You might give the student an outline of what you will be discussing or provide a copy of whatever you are reading to the class. When speaking to the class as a group, use as many visual aids as possible. Posters, charts, transparencies on the overhead, the chalkboard, big books, and slide shows are some examples of tools you can use in your classroom

Also use hand gestures and body language when speaking to the class. The student may pick up on cues from you. If you know sign language, use it.body language Write all content information on the board. Content information might include spelling words, vocabulary and definitions, historical dates and facts, math examples, etc

Make sure the student can see you when you are speaking. Speak slowly, loudly, and clearly. Some hearing impaired students can read lips. Avoid multiple verbal directions. Show him/her what to do. The student will follow along a lot better if shown what to do, rather than told what to do. Write homework on the board for students to copy. Avoid giving homework assignments verbally.

Educational Adaptations and Strategies Teachers need to make special considerations when teaching hearing-impaired children. ▫Ensure the child has an optimal hearing and listening environment in the classroom; ▫There should be minimal distance between the teacher and the child to facilitate lipreading; ▫Face the child during all oral communication;

▫Ensure there is good lighting to reinforce clear sight of visual aids; ▫Don’t exaggerate pronunciation ▫Use as much visual information as possible to reinforce auditory information provided; ▫Keep environmental noise to a minimum to keep from interfering with listening devices; and ▫Teachers should frequently check to see that the listening devices are working properly.
