Hope for Haiti Benefit Dinner Manchester College creates service projects to support Haiti “Our hearts are with the country of Haiti,” says Carole Miller-Patrick, who coordinates the Center for Service Opportunities and the Office of Volunteer Services for Manchester College. In the wake of the devastating earthquake that shook the island country of Haiti, Manchester College is stepping up to lend a helping hand with its Hope for Haiti campaign. “At a time when we all feel helpless and want to contribute and help, many ideas to aid the victims are being generated across the Manchester campus,” Miller-Patrick says, noting, “Manchester College has always been an institution that takes pride in serving others and students, faculty and staff want to help in whatever way they can.” Students have designed and produced “Hope for Haiti” pin for distribution to those who make monetary contributions or want to show their support. All funds raised for the campus Hope for Haiti campaign will go directly to the American Red Cross and to Save the Children. Both organizations are committing every dollar raised to relief efforts in Haiti. Members of the College community and friends also are coming forth with “overwhelming” response to a desperate need for hygiene kits for Haiti residents. Volunteers are sorting and collecting the items into zippered gallon-size plastic bags for delivery to the American Red Cross in Haiti via One World Handicrafts in North Manchester. Especially needed are nail clippers (no metal files or emery boards) and towels, especially the 16x28-inch (approximately) size. Also going into the kits: washcloths, combs, bars of soap, toothbrushes and band-aids. Drop-off sites are at the campus Center for Service Opportunities, in the basement of East Hall and at the Student Development office on the third floor of Calvin-Ulrey Hall. On the eve of spring semester – from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 2 – a benefit spaghetti dinner will be served buffet-style in the College Union. The cost is $5 cash only; the meal is open to the public. Takeout meals also are available, at Outtakes at the entrance to Haist Commons. Students may not use their meal plan account for the optional fundraiser meal. Student groups assisting in the setup of the dinner include AmeriCorps MC3 Fellows, Circle K, Pathways 2010 participants, Professor Benson Onyeji’s African History class and Office of Volunteer Services student directors.
