Research Question: What Are the Health Effects of Coffee?

Introduction: Coffee is a controversial stimulant It’s important to know what effects coffee has on our health Annual Worldwide Consumption of Coffee Exceeds 4 Million Tons

Article #1 coffee+mental stress task Caffeine-naïve vs. Caffeine- habituated females They were given normal cup of coffee and HR, BP, and mental alertness were monitored Used a word fluency test

The combined Effect of coffee and Mental stress task. Caffeine-Naïve Caffeine- habituated Blood Pressure  SBP and  DBP  SBP and  DBP Heart Rate  Mental Alertness  Article #1 Results

Article #2 Caffeine and Progression of Dementia Two groups were formed, each group consisting of individuals that were normal, MCI, and those who already have dementia One group received doses of caffeine below the critical level of daily caffeine intake and the other received doses of caffeine above the critical level

Article #2 Results The results of the study concluded that the subjects who were MIC at the beginning of the study and received the above critical level amount of caffeine as treatment had a lower rate of the onset of dementia than any other subjects in the study.

Article #3 Endothelial Function researchers investigated the acute effects of caffeine and antioxidants on endothelial function measured by brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD) Two groups formed with caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee (130mg and 5mg of caffeine respectively)

Article #3 Researchers came to the conclusion that both systolic and diastolic blood pressure were higher in the CC group, FMD decreased in CC group. There was no difference in glucose concentration in either group. In conclusion the authors discussed that CC may have acute unfavorable cardiovascular effects in healthy subjects.

Article #4 Caffeinated and Decaffeinated coffee Tested somnolence Two groups Caffeinated and Decaffeinated coffee (130mg/5mg respectively

Article #4 Results The results concluded that consumption of CC adversely effected somnolence. The deactivation of sleepiness in turn stimulated subjective activation in participants. DC also produced a decrease in somnolence and an increase in activation evaluations

Article #5 Adolescents Study included adolescents of Iceland from ages Surveys were administered to assess the relationship between adolescents, their consumption of caffeinated substances and the effect it has on their sleep patterns and their behavior

Article #5 Results The results indicated that the use of caffeine was only moderately related to sleepiness, They also indicated that there is strong inverse correlation related to academic achievement

Conclusions More research needed The Caffeine in coffee raises BP, and decreases HR Moderation is important Coffee could be effective against the development of dementia Coffee may have acute unfavorable cardiovascular effects in healthy subjects.
