BIM for Construction Using ArchiCAD Copyright© by T. Sulbaran & M. Shiratuddin – Thomas Delmar Learning - ASC Lecture Objectives After completing this lecture, students should be able to: Outline the difference between 3D models and Building Information Modeling (BIM) Define Building Information Modeling (BIM) Describe the overall goal of Building Information Modeling (BIM) List four BIM commercial tools Describe Graphisoft's ArchiCAD List four built-in and four add-on features of ArchiCAD Lecture Objectives BIM – Introduction BIM – Definition BIM - Purpose BIM Enabled Software (Commercially Available) BIM Example BIM in AEC

BIM for Construction Using ArchiCAD Copyright© by T. Sulbaran & M. Shiratuddin – Thomas Delmar Learning - ASC BIM - Introduction Technology advances instigated transition of design medium from 2D paper-based drawings to 3D digital models on computer screen - led to the introduction of Building Information Modeling (BIM) Matta et al (2006) - there exist progression from 2D to 3D, 4D, and BIM 3D models make valuable contributions to communications, not all 3D models qualify as BIM models 3D geometry is only part of the BIM –M = geometry –I = information shared to generate feedback and for decision making –B = building (of course) Lecture Objectives BIM – Introduction BIM – Definition BIM - Purpose BIM Enabled Software (Commercially Available) BIM Example BIM in AEC

BIM for Construction Using ArchiCAD Copyright© by T. Sulbaran & M. Shiratuddin – Thomas Delmar Learning - ASC BIM – Definition Generic term used to describe advanced 3D CAD technology for modeling and managing buildings and information related to them. BIM models are differentiated from traditional CAD systems in that the software objects in a BIM model are intelligible to computer programs as representations of real-world building components, unlike the graphic objects in a two-dimensional CAD file” (Sacks et al, 2005). The American Institute of Architects (AIA) defines BIM as “a model-based technology linked with a database of project information”. BIM covers geometry, spatial relationships, geographic information, quantities and properties of building components. BIM for Construction Using ArchiCAD Copyright© by T. Sulbaran & M. Shiratuddin – Thomas Delmar Learning - ASC BIM – Definition A basic premise of BIM is collaboration by different stakeholders during different phases of project life cycle –to insert, extract, update or modify information in the BIM process to support and reflect the roles of that stakeholder (NBIMS Project Committee, 2006) BIM was conceived to remedy the problem of fragmentation and error by creating a system to house or manage all of the information needed in a particular project in a single repository that could be accessed by all project participants and readily incorporated into all project documents (Cyon Research, 2003; Khemlani, 2003) Lecture Objectives BIM – Introduction BIM – Definition BIM - Purpose BIM Enabled Software (Commercially Available) BIM Example BIM in AEC
