Some informations about Ireland Politically it is divided into the Republic of Ireland, a sovereign state occupying five-sixths of the island, and Northern Ireland, a part of the United Kingdom, occupying the northeastern sixth of the island. The name 'Ireland' derives from the name Eriu (in modern Irish, Éire) with the addition of the Germanic word 'land‘..

The population of the island is slightly under six million (2006), with 4,239,848 in the Republic of Ireland and about 1.7 million in Northern Ireland. Ireland became part of the European Union in 1973 so the currency is the Euro. In the Republic of Ireland, Roman Catholicism is the most important religion

The history of Dublin  Founded as a centre of Viking settlement, the city has been Ireland's capital since mediaeval times. The settlement 'Dubh Linn' dates perhaps as far back as the first century BC and later a monastery was built there.  After the Norman invasion of Ireland, Dublin became Ireland's capital.  The Easter Rising of 1916 left the capital in an unstable situation and the Anglo-Irish War and Irish Civil War left it in ruins.

 In recent years the infrastructure of Dublin has changed immensely, with enormous private and state development of housing, transport, and business.  From 1922, Dublin served as the capital of the Irish free state (1922–1937) and now of the Republic of Ireland.  In 2003, in a BBC report, it was said that Dublin was the best capital city in Europe to live in and Ireland the most content country in Europe.  Dublin is the third most visited capital city in Europe (after Paris and London) with over four million visitors a year
