Digital Cameras Caitlin Stamper

The first commercially available digital camera was the 1990 Dycam Model 1 (Logitech Fotoman). It used a CCD image sensor, stored pictures digitally, and connected directly to a computer for download. Short history

How it works Takes video or still photographs, usually both, by recording images using an electronic image sensor. Most usually capable of capturing color video or stills. Uses a lens with a variable diaphragm that focuses light onto an image, admits the correct amount of light through a shutter and digitally saves the image to the cameras memory device. Many digital cameras now include wireless communication capabilities, such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, that allows you to transfer, print, or share photos straight from the camera.

Basic Displays images on a screen immediately after they are recorded. Stores thousands of images on a single small memory device. Deletes images to free storage space. Most usually charged by batteries. Modes: preset modes allows you to change such things as exposure, aperture, focusing, light metering, white balance, and sensitivity.

Benefits Encourage student collaboration and interaction. Easy to use. Immediate outcomes. Large memory storage. Mode presets for more advanced use. Downsides Fairly easy to break. Screens may break down first. Expensive.

Cost Prices vary: Basic digital cameras usually start around $40. Highly accessorized, fancy digital cameras can be over $50,000. Teacher bundles: cheapest 10-pack for $1100.

Specific for Classrooms Bigshot camera Designed for the purpose of education. (Still in a prototype phase.) Created by Shree K. Nayar. Bigshot project launched in The first set of Bigshot cameras were used in 2009 for community outreach workshops (children, adults, and teachers), positive outcome. A build-it-yourself kit: students build the camera themselves. A transparent back cover with labels for each major component. A website with interactive demos that teach the science and engineering behind the camera. A normal lens with a 43° field of view. A panoramic lens with a 72° field of view. A polyoptic lens wheel: allows users to change lenses by rotating the wheel. A hand crank to power the camera without any batteries. Feature List

Specific for Classrooms Image presenters, visual presenters, digital visualizers, digital overheads, docucams. Real-time image capture devices for displaying an object to a large audience. Magnifies and projects the images of actual, three-dimensional objects, as well as transparencies (Like an opaque projector). Any object can be displayed by a document camera. The camera takes the picture which in turn produces a live picture using a projector. Use USB cables or can be connected to interactive whiteboards. Document Camera

Students collaborate… The use of digital cameras in the classroom encourage students to interact in order to learn about the cameras and collaborate on creating perfect pictures and videos for projects or acitivities. Students can photograph themselves, other students, field trips, class work, etc. cameras in schoolcameras in school Students are able to use digital cameras to explore every academic subject in a very hands- on way.
