ZANZIBAR - TANZANIA

POSITIVE IMPACTS ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENTAL SOCIAL $220 MILLION a year comes into the country from tourism Jobs are created for the locals for hotels in Nungwi The Zanzibar Serena hotel, has used tourist money to improve its tourists building in stone town. Stone town is being designated as a world heritage site has given its protection from tourism development. Development can take place only if it is to help to conserve the buildings in the town. New ferry terminal was built at Zanzibar town. Around 1000 locals and tourists use it everyday. Internet access has improved as tourists demand this. Locals also have access to cyber cafes which have opened.

NEGATIVE IMPACTS ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENTAL SOCIAL Fisherman are no longer allowed on the beaches due to tourists, for example, at Uroa. The hotels have fenced off the beaches to make them private, which means that the local fisherman cannot fish. Where the fisherman do have access the tourists have scared the fish away. The jobs in hotels, for example, the Serena hotel in Stone town, are menial and low paid. Coral reef to the north of the island near Nungwi is being destroyed by tourists breaking off pieces and taking them home as souvenirs. Sewage is put straight into the sea. At Zanzibar town, tourists walk around the sewage as it treacle's onto the beach. Zanzibar is a Muslim country, tourists have different moral codes, for example, they do not cover their shoulders and this insults the local inhabitants. Tourists are wealthier than the local people. This has lead to an increase in muggings on the east coast near the hotels at Uroa and Matemwe.
