Connect. Communicate. Collaborate GÉANT2 and towards GÉANT3 Otto Kreiter, DANTE 7 th RoEduNet Conference Cluj-Napoca, August 2008

Connect. Communicate. Collaborate 2 Outline Who is DANTE (and what do they do)? What is GÉANT2? Services (for the “masses” and the “big boys”) Towards GÉANT3 Summary

Connect. Communicate. Collaborate 3 DANTE Today Delivery of Advanced Network Technology to Europe A UK-based not-for-profit limited liability company Created and owned by a number of European NRENs DANTE plan, build and manage pan-European R&E networks on behalf of the NRENS in Europe Started in 1993 Based in Cambridge, UK Currently 43 staff (14 nationalities) Turnover ~ €50M per annum

Connect. Communicate. Collaborate 4 What is GÉANT2? A European R&E Networking Model: 7th generation of pan-European research network infrastructure – continuation of a success story Project partners include 30 of Europe’s national research and education networks (NRENs), DANTE (coordinator) and TERENA Connects 34 European countries and serves over 3500 research and education establishments across Europe Over 30 million users Provides extensive international connectivity to other world regions Funded jointly by NRENs and the European Commission Project timescale September August 2008

GÉANT2 Project Partners

Connect. Communicate. Collaborate 6 GÉANT2 Connect. Communicate. Collaborate A few Facts & Figures… 29 POPs serving 30 NRENs ~12000 km of fibre >120 (own) 10G lambdas 22 (leased) 10G lambdas + some lower speed links NREN accesses at up to 10Gbps (+ backup) + P2P 4 x 10G to North America POP in NY connections to other R&E networks… Abilene (Internet2), ESnet, CA*net4, SINET, TENET, EUMEDCONNECT, RedCLARA, TEIN2, India

Connect. Communicate. Collaborate 10 Connect. Communicate. Collaborate IP network

Connect. Communicate. Collaborate 11 GÉANT2 Services - I GÉANT IP –IP Peering –IPv6 –Multicast (v4/v6) –Premium IP –Layer 2 VPN GÉANT Lambda Service –STM-64 and 10GE lambdas –Same price regardless of source or destination (on the dark fibre foot-print)

Connect. Communicate. Collaborate 12 GÉANT2 Services - II GÉANT PLUS – p2p Circuit Service –cost-effective support for high-capacity [“lightpath”] services –up to 10G (for now) –emphasis placed on support for Ethernet framing –translational P2P service support e.g. native gigE to GFP VC-4-7v over SDH –develop rapid provisioning → BoD (JRA3/AutoBAHN)

Connect. Communicate. Collaborate 13 GÉANT2 (not just a network!) NETWORKING ACTIVITIES (NAs) (Human networks) Management Dissemination and outreach User support (NRENs) SERVICE ACTIVITIES (SAs) (focus on services, not infrastructure) Network Service Provisioning Network Operation and Support JOINT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES (JRAs) Focus on academic, technological research But also an INTEGRATED INFRASTRUCTURE INITIATIVE - I3

Connect. Communicate. Collaborate 14 Access to GÉANT2 The GÉANT2 backbone is not the whole story… Remember that the GÉANT2 extended community is comprised of the GÉANT2 backbone PLUS 30 NRENs Often an NREN may be behind an autonomous regional R&E network (from the user’s point of view) Key point is that services are provided in a federated multi-domain, multi-technology environment!

Connect. Communicate. Collaborate 22 40G & 100G in GÉANT2 10 Gb/s IP trunk links are starting to fill, need 40 Gbps option A-L already has phase shaped binary transmission (PSBT) modulation for km lengths. Good dispersion tolerance with narrow spectral width allowing use of existing 50 GHz grid But GÉANT2 has long PoP-PoP links (~800km, up to ~2000km) Differential phase shift keying (DPSK) suitable for spans up to 1000km but requires 100 GHz channel spacing Trial of 40 Gb/s with DPSK modulation planned (likely for Geneva – Frankfurt) just as soon as we can get our hands on it! 100G experiments (JRA4, optical researchers, “DIY”)

Connect. Communicate. Collaborate 23.. towards GÉANT3 GÉANT2 finishes 30 th June 2009 – extended from 31 st August 2008 GÉANT3 will start June/July 2009 and lasts four years GÉANT3 proposal submission 11 th September 2008 –evaluation – refining – negotiation with the EC

Connect. Communicate. Collaborate 24 GÉANT3 Vision & Mission GÉANT3 creates an innovative multi-domain hybrid networking infrastructure enabling R&E end-users through their organizations with flexible and scalable production quality services via constituent NRENs.

Connect. Communicate. Collaborate 25 GÉANT3 guiding principles Coordinated end-user services –Eduroam, eduGAIN Hybrid optical backbone planning & operations Multi-domain management –Common network information exporting schemas and Information flow –Control and management planes across domains

Connect. Communicate. Collaborate 26 GÉANT3 guiding principles R&E catalyst –creating a Pan-European human network for innovation and early service adoption Advancing towards the network of the future –Combining networking for research with research for networking e-Society catalyst –help bridging digital divides –boost dark fibre provisions throughout Europe –contribute to the creation of liberalized connectivity markets within its realm –encourage vast adoption of advanced e-Services to Schools and Universities

Connect. Communicate. Collaborate 27 GÉANT3 (not just a network!) NETWORKING ACTIVITIES (NAs) Management Dissemination and outreach User and development support (NRENs) Internal and International cooperation Liaison with standard bodies SERVICE ACTIVITIES (SAs) (focus on services, not infrastructure) Multi-domain Network Service Provisioning Multi-domain Network Operation and Support End-user services (VC, eduGAIN/Eduroam) JOINT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES (JRAs) Focus on academic, technological research Virtualisation, Core network technologies, Advanced network control, Security, monitoring But also an INTEGRATED INFRASTRUCTURE INITIATIVE - I3

Connect. Communicate. Collaborate 28 Summary GÉANT2 is a hybrid network connecting 30 NRENs Circuit services highly successful but cumbersome to manage end to end Building on the success of the research activities in GÉANT2, new services are planned for GÉANT3 Focus on end to end management of services accros the GÉANT3 service area
