INTRODUCTION In Mumbai the Tiffin lunchbox service runs every working day. And everyday without the aid of any modern technology, 5000 delivery boys deliver 2,00,000 lunch boxes to the office workers eager to have a home cooked lunch. Mumbaikars are the only people in the world who have the option of eating homemade food at work without the bother of having to carry a cumbersome lunchbox. DABBAWALA

Using six sigma one can measure how many defects there are in a process and can systematically figure out how to eliminate them. DABBAWALA

MANAGEMENT PROCESS DABBAWALA

PLANNING Planning is a very important aspect. The dabbawallas mainly plan about.. From where, when and how many dabbas have to be picked from a particular area. Who has to go where and at which station the dabbas have to be assembled. By whom the boxes have to be collected and returned back. What should be the timing for the entire process. What should be the means of transport. Delivery reliability, workforce and dress code. They also have to plan about their coding strategy so that they differentiate between the dabbas. DABBAWALA

(destination station) CODING No. of dabbawala who picks it up from destination Station A Andheri 8 Express towers (building name) 6 E L Lokhandwala Complex (source point) 11 11th Floor Nariman Point (destination station) DABBAWALA

ORGANISING The dabbawallas have to organise for various things so that their planning doesn’t fail. They have to organise for.. Means of transport i.e. cycles and railway passes Wooden crates Tiffins (dabbas) Dress code DABBAWALA

ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE DABBAWALA

STAFFING There’s no criteria as such for staffing the members. Generation after generation people involve themselves in this business. The dabbawallas generally hail from neighbouring villages There’s no retirement age and people work as long as they want. DABBAWALA

LEADERSHIP AND MOTIVATION The dabbawallas have their community called NMTBSA which has the President, Vice-President and the Secretary. They act as leaders and lead the dabbawallas on a whole. 15-20 dabbawallas work in co-operative units which is leaded and supervised by Mukadams, the group leaders DABBAWALA

CO-ORDINATION Co-ordination is the most important aspect in the working of the dabbawallas. Daily one set of dabbawallas collects the Tiffins from the homes, another set unloads at the station and the third set sorts it out and deliver it Thus in a single day the dabbas change hands four to five times. Each group teams up with the other for deliveries. The dabbas reach at the right place because of the remarkable co-ordination between these people. DABBAWALA

CONTROL The dabbawallas put control on themselves by following the discipline which is: No alcohol drinking during business hours Wearing white cap during business hours Carry identity cards DABBAWALA

TIME MANAGEMENT DABBAWALA

The onward and return journey.. 10:35-11:20 am : the dabbawalas load the wooden crates filled with Tiffin's onto the luggage or goods compartment in the train. 11:20-12:30 pm : At this stage the unloading takes place at a destination station. The arrangement of tiffins takes place as per the destination area and building. DABBAWALA

1:15-2:00 pm : Here on begins the collection process 1:15-2:00 pm : Here on begins the collection process. The dabbawalas pick up the tiffins from the offices which they had delivered almost an hour ago. 2:00-2:30 pm : The group members meet for the segregation as per the destination suburb. DABBAWALA

2:48-3:30 pm : The return journey by train where the group finally meets up after the day’s routine of dispatching and collecting from various destination offices. 3:30-4:00 pm : This is the stage where the final sorting and dispatching takes place. The groups then sort out the tiffins as per the origin area. DABBAWALA

‘ENGLAND KA RAJA’ MEETS THE CITY’S DABBA KINGS For the first time ever Prince Charles honoured the dabbawalas in his visit on the 4th of Nov,2003. Taking keen interest in their way of functioning, he was surprised to know the fact that they didn’t employ any modern technology. DABBAWALA

The Prince was presented with a small momento accompanied with a garland, a Gandhi topi & a trophy by the dabbawallas. British High Commission spokesperson said that “Every city has beautiful buildings and views but no other city in the world or in India has our dabbawalas.” DABBAWALA
