Animal fiction appears in many different forms but all of the stories include one or more animals as the focus of the story Fiction is defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary as: Prose literature, esp. short stories and novels, about imaginary events and people Animal Fiction 2

 Four main subtypes are:  Animal fables: in which an animal is associated with a human trait is usually accompanied by a moral at the end  Pet Stories: in which the child is the hero but the animal is a crucial part of the story  Animal Fantasy: where the animal is anthropomorphized; often wearing clothing and speaking.  Real Animals: story is told from animal’s perspective; often used to comment on human behavior, but have no “human” characteristics themselves. 3
